Thursday. July 28. 1977
Time limit is asked on freeway construction noise
While many view the new M-14 expressway
as a decided improvement
at least one Plvmouth Township resident
thinks its a pain in the neck
Anna Mulligan, who lives on Schoolcraft
Koad. asked the township board
of trustees to approve an ordinance restricting
the hours of construction on
the highwav And the officials are
goins to see what they can do to oblige
her
In a letter to Supervisor Thomas
Notehaert Mrs Mulligan complained
that the noise from the machinery con-
tinues unabated from dawn to dusk
•"Work on the highway along Sehc*>lcraft
is in full force'" she said "And
it is no pleasure being jolted out of
one's bed at 5:30 in the morning from
the sounds of heavy equipment
"This would not be too bad except
some of this machinery is still in operation
at 9 p.m. Fifteen and a half
hours of constant noise from the equipment.
air horns and back-up warning
beeps is more than a human can take.
Tins is above and beyond the dust
Housing on upswing
"Please don't tell me that we are
getting a million dollar highway." she
continued, "because I'm getting a two
million dollar breakdown Pom lack of
sleep "
MRS. MULLIGAN complained that
both Plymouth and Livonia have construction
starting times of 7 a m She
wanted to know if the township
couldn't "get in step" and pass a similar
ordinance.
Trustee Frank Millington. who also
lives near the expressway, said he
h;id gotten used to the noise and
sleeps very well.
"Try it in your backyard." responded
Mrs. Mulligan from the audience."
Deputy Clerk Marv Kllen Kenvon
asked if Mrs Mulligan's complaint
could be taken care of through an existing
township ordinance limiting the
level of noise in public
But Trustee Richard CJornick said
that particular ordinance had to do
with federal noise regulations and
didn't limit when the noise could take
place Notebaert commented that he
the general upswing in the economy."
Barns. Westland City Council president.
"If the current economic trend continues.
I think we will continue to see
an increase in residential construction
activity." Mrs Barns said
Construction of multiple-family
dwellings remained at low levels,
while single-family construction activity
is on the increase regionally. SFM-
COG reported.
The City of Detroit issued a total of
5KK building permits, placing in second
only to Canton Township in new
construction in Wayne County. But Detroit
