July 28. 1977 50 compete in Jr. Olympics The annual Plvmouth-Canton Youth Fitness Day (Junior Olympics) saw more than 50 boys and girls compete in different events at the Central Middle School track Monday afternoon The events included competition from the "A" Class (14-15-year-olds). 'B" Class (12-13-year-olds) and the "C" Class (10-11-year-olds). Plymouth Canton High's Connie Mack summer baseball team, has finished another successful season with a second-place standing in the Adray Connie Mack League This runners up position qualifies the Merchants to post-season tournament play in the National Amateur Baseball Federation (NABF) Senior Tournament to be held this weekend at Oakland University. If the Merchants survive this tourney, the squad would travel to Columbus. Ohio, for a national event Adray Appliance (Bedford Union) finished first in the league standings with a 20-4 record and the Plymouth Merchants followed with a 19-6 mark The Merchants were the only team to defeat Adray twice this season The other teams in this league included crews from Southfield. Plymouth Salem. Thurston and Northville By virtue of its first-place finish. Bedford will compete in an American Amateur Baseball Conference (AABC) tournament next week The Merchants, coached by Fred Crisseyl were led this summer by the fine pitching of Doug Smith (7-2) and Brian James (6-3). "I'm | really pleased with the way the kidSi have played this summer, after coming off a good school season.'' said Crissev. "We played 25 games in a tough league." "There is nothing wrong with Little League sports " he said A main issue in the conrtfcoversv is the difference in the bone and muscle structure of the voung athletes as compared to older ones Milder said that the bones and muscles at that age are radically different and can be hurt but he said that it is unlikely to happen to a large degree * When it comes to a general rehabili tation program. Milder says that the time factor for recovery depends on the degree of injury and the patient. Tennis elbow A middle aged man comes into the clinic with a moderate case of tennis elbow Milder would locate the pain exactly and test it to see how bad the pain is The next step would be to treat the elbow Milder would use ice for treat ment and as an anaesthetic so exercise could be done He would also use a new method of treatment. Milder stressed three important points. "It's important to stretch the strong muscles and to strengthen the weak ones. Bloom, a 1976 graduate from Salem, is a tall, lanky netter who has a powerful two-handed backhand which should surpass all. Bloom will probably face Pasley in the semifinals. In the other bracket, watch for third-seed Rama to upend second-seed Wideman in the semifinals This should be a real grudge match since both men met each other in the 1975 finals in which Rama was victorious. Wideman. a 1966 graduate of Plymouth High School and tennis instructor for the continuing education office, has had trouble gaining a first place trophy in the past two years, settling for second place honors in the singles, doubles and mixed doubles events each summer. The Observer's Patrick Touhey will also try his hand in the singles event, and I predict he should have an easy time in his first-round match against Dan Janusis. But the second round won't be as re warding for the star reporter as he faces seventh-seed Curt Schultz. Knough said 0 It won't be the Larry Masteller- Rich Madsen show in the men's 35years and older competition this year And the reason for that is Jim Hayes The last two years found Masteller defeating Madsen for the championship Each match went three sets in grueling heat But this year, both men have been knocked down to the second and third seed positions because of Hayes Hayes, coach of the Plymouth C ton varsity tennis team, hasn't bart pated in this event for two years is by far the best of all the athlet. in this catecory. In the semifinals. I will predict . Madsen win over Masteller this year I don't think Masteller can turn the trick for a third time in a row. Besides. his legs are one year older. Leonard Koeninger. the fourth seed, will advance to the semifinals against Hayes THE WOMEN'S 16-over division will be dominated by the pair of Eastern Michigan University students, Laura Hastings and Beth Redmond Both women, who are former members of the Plymouth Salem tennis team, met in the finals last year and will undoubtly be right back on top this Sunday. Hastings, the first-seed, has been improving on her singles play while at EMU and should defeat her friend in another close match Both women are overwhelming favorites and first-seeds to win their third-straight women's doubles title Patti Piel, the third-seed in the women's singles competition, should take Redmond to three sets before losing in the semifinals. Fourth-seed Kathy Granger, a recent Plymouth novice tennis winner, will be easy pickins for Hastings in the other semifinals. The women's 35-years and older division has only six players competing so no seeds were chosen But watch for Judy Braun to win all the marbles IN OTHER DOUBLES play, Steve Prueter and Rama are the first seeds and defending champions of the men's action. Wideman and Bloom team up for the second seed Bill Moehle and Maybury are the third seeds and Hayes and Nowak are positioned fourth. More than 20 men's combinations will play in this category and watch for the fourth seeded team of Hayes and Nowak to upset everyone enroute to victory. Wideman and Bloom should easily handle Moehle and Maybury in the semifinals but will fall to the fourth seeds in the championship. Rama and Prueter will undoubtedly take Hayes and Nowak to three sets but I'm betting on the upset Ironically, Hayes was Prueter's coach for three straight seasons on vthe Canton team in 1974, 1975 and 1976 In mixed doubles action, the firstseeds Redmond and Moehle will more than likely defend their title. The only tough competition they should experience is from the second-seeded duo of Wideman and Hastings. IN BOYS competition, ages 13-15, Scott Crespo heads the ei!ht players as the first seed Crespo was last year's runner-up. Dick Cook is the second seed. Mike Sharp third, and Larry Kummer the fourth. 1 would like to predict Dick Cook as the winner of this category, but due to the untimely death of his brother Bill, also a fine tennis player, he may decide not to play. Crespo will meet Sharp, the Plymouth novice winner, for the championship Nine 10-12-year old boys will compete in this category but none were seeded I'm not familiar with this age bracket and will pass on a prediction THE GIRLS 13-15-years category finds two great players in Kathy Hor- Register for soccer league Registration for the fall season of the Western Suburban Soccer League takes place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Plymouth Cultural Center, 525 Farmer Street Registration is open for both boys and girls, ages 10-18. living in the Canton slow-pitch softball news Undefeated McMurray Insurance of the Canton Township men's softball league gained its 12th victory of the season against no defeats with a 5-1 victory over Little Caesar last week The victory was an important one for the Division A' leaders, as it clinched an unpredented sixth' straight league title The only goal McMurray hasn't obtained this season is a perfect season, although it seems extremely possible with only three games remaining on the schedule Mike Stanislawski's perfect day at the plate supplied the punch for the McMurray victory Don Massey Cadillac, the second place team with an 8-4 record, disposed of Clark Block. 18- 12. in other A' action. Jack Warner, Criag Warner and Mike Han- Ion paced the potent Massey attack PERLONGO won the 'B' title last week after edging Meijer Thrifty Acres, 9-5 Perlongo managed to score at least one run in every inning but the fourth to clinch the victory.
