Detroit and suburbs
i
fill vacation days
• Vacationing right around homo can be relaxing—and
exciting. Whenever you find yourself in
rfietropolitan Detroit m citv or suburb, there's
lots to do.
I didn't plan it that way. but each day of a vacation
week spent at home I found myself enjoying
an afternooon or evening in Birmingham. Dearborn
or Detroit
Having lunch for the first time at the Pool, at
the P'air Lane Conference Center m Dearborn. I
had an opportunity to drive through the campus
of the University 'if Michigan-Dearborn, then
walk in a quiet garden just outside the Pool *
The restaurant takes over what used to be the
ijidoor swimming pool on the Henrv Ford estate
The high-ceilinged room has decorative wall
motifs and is an airv delight with wicker chairs
and plants. The color scheme is neutrals of beige
and brown combined with white.
THK POOl, resembles an enclosed courtyard
with a skvlight. Its menu features a daily special
11 had short ribs at *2 50t with salad bar. For $4-
$5. including tax and tip vou can have an entree
salad, potato or vegetable and dessert
No liquor is served at the Pool, open weekdays
for lunch But there are daisies on the table And
if you're feeling touristy, go back for a visit to
the adioining Ford mansion which offers public
tours on weekends.
There's shopping at Fairlane Center nearbv. a
maze of stores which aren't as mind-boggling on
a weekday as thev are on a weekend when the
crowd arrives.
A DAY OF shopping in Birmingham included
stops at some of rnv favorite shops, as well as
ones I hadn't visited before Fvervthing from P;ippagallo
classics to Levis are featured in the specijdtv
apparel stores.
Lunch at Machus Allev door igo nast the cafeteria.
to the back room* was quiet amid subdued
lighting There are contemporary ceiling lights
hung over some tables and candles in red holders
on the tables
The mood is informal with brick walls hung
with photos of old cars lanes and streets
It was a la/.v summer dav that found the restaurant
uncrowded and unhurried at noontime Cood
waitress service was one of the attractions.
Machus Alley door has a liquor license, so I had
a glass of white wine and a single crepe (chicken
a la king), plus vegetable (summer squash» for
$3.50 Dill pickles and pumpernickel bread are
served with every meal but are most suitable to
heartier menu selections
ANOTHER DAY in Detroit. I browsed at
Emily's Across the Street where vou can buv Tshirts
which say Emily's Across the Street < I did)
and lots of other good stuff.
It was a hot afternoon and the offbeat store
with eye-catching wares was jammed with shop
ix'rs. Around the corner a flower seller was hawking
fresh flowers
Next to Emily's, the outdoor cafe at the Salt
Mine was filled with late lunchers. 1 decided to
forego one of Emily's big double-dipped ice
cream cones to dine at the sidewalk cafe instead.
The menu is one that offers sandwiches and
other things with appetizing names and combinations
There is imported beer, as well as wine
and coolers that go well with a cafe meal For
about $5. I had a jambon (ham) and cheese sandwich
tossed salad and beer. The food was especially
good, and the menu says the fixings come
from Eastern Market.
Back in Dearborn one evening. I took in the
view that included downtown Detroit and the Renaissance
Center from the revolving cooktail
lounge at the Hvatt Regency
(FOR REVOLVING roof freaks, there's also the
Rondjj-View in Southfield and the Summit at Detroit's
Hotel Plaza.) The view from the Summit,
which I saw on another occasion, can only be described
as spectacular
