disorder to treat, particularly because of reluctance on the part of the patient
to undergo surgery for a condition that is only occasionally present and also
on the part of the surgeon who has to weigh the pros and cons of surgery and
its appropriate timing. The issue of binocularity and its effect on the daily
working of the individual is perhaps the most important consideration while
making such decisions. An attempt has been made with the help of this study
to elucidate the fact that BPS can help simplify decision making both for the
surgeon as well as the patient. The BPS combines multiple variables hence is
an effective predictive tool that could be used to explain prognosis to patients
and can also serve as a guideline for planning surgery at an appropriate stage.
The patients can be counselled that though the disease is intermittent waiting
will lead to deterioration of the BPS grade and consequently poorer sensory
results. Thus the primary utility of BPS is for follow up and for deciding
appropriate timing for surgery.
