THE LITURGY OF THE WORD
THE FIRST LESSON Wisdom 3:1-5, 9
The Lesson is introduced by the Lector saying
A reading from The Book of the Wisdom of Solomon.
But the souls of the righteous are in the hand of God, and there shall no torment touch them. In the sight of the
unwise they seemed to die: and their departure is taken for misery, And their going from us to be utter destruction:
but they are in peace. For though they be punished in the sight of men, yet is their hope full of immortality. And
having been a little chastised, they shall be greatly rewarded: for God proved them, and found them worthy for
himself. They that put their trust in him shall understand the truth: and such as be faithful in love shall abide with
him: for grace and mercy is to his saints, and he hath care for his elect.
After the Reading, the Lector says
The Word of the Lord.
People Thanks be to God.
The Psalm appointed is sung by the Choir. The People remain seated.
PSALM 23 Dominus regit me Anglican Chant (Hylton Stewart)
T
HE Lord is my shepherd;* therefore can I lack nothing.
2 He shall feed me in a green pasture,*
and lead me forth beside the waters of comfort.
3 He shall convert my soul,* and bring me forth in the paths of righteousness for his Name’s sake.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;*
for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff comfort me.
5 Thou shalt prepare a table before me against them that trouble me;* thou hast anointed my head with oil,
and my cup shall be full.
6 But thy loving-kindness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life;*
and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
Rest eternal grant unto her, O Lord:* and let light perpetual shine upon her.
THE EPISTLE 1 Corinthians 15:50-58
The Epistle is introduced by the Subdeacon of the Eucharist saying
A reading from The First Epistle of Saint Paul to the Corinthians.
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit
incorruption. Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the
twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we
shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. So when
this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought
to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is
thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the
victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Therefore, my beloved brethren, be ye stedfast, unmoveable, always
abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord.
After the Reading, the Subdeacon says
The Word of The Lord.
People Thanks be to God.
The People stand.
HYMN VICTORY
LLELUIA, Alleluia, Alleluia!
The strife is o’er, the battle done,
The victory of life is won;
The song of triumph has begun.
Alleluia!
2. The powers of death have done their worst,
But Christ their legions hath dispersed:
Let shout of holy joy outburst.
Alleluia!
3. The three sad days are quickly sped,
He rises glorious from the dead:
All glory to the risen Head!
Alleluia!
5. Lord! by the stripes which wounded thee,
From death’s dread sting thy servants free,
That we may live and sing to thee.
Alleluia!
4. He closed the yawning gates of hell,
The bars from heaven’s high portals fell;
Let hymns of praise his triumphs tell!
Alleluia!
THE HOLY GOSPEL Saint John 6:37-40
The People remain standing as the Deacon of the Eucharist reads the Gospel, first saying
The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Saint John.
People sing Glory be to thee, O Lord.
All that the Father giveth me shall come to me; and him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out. For I came
down from heaven, not to do mine own will, but the will of him that sent me. And this is the Father’s will which
hath sent me, that of all which he hath given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up again at the last day.
And this is the will of him that sent me, that every one which seeth the Son, and believeth on him, may have
everlasting life: and I will raise him up at the last day.
After the Gospel, the Deacon says
The Gospel of the Lord.
People sing Praise be to thee, O Christ.
HOMILY The Rector
The People stand.
HYMN ST. DUNSTAN’S
H
E who would valiant be ‘gainst all disaster
Let him in constancy
Follow the Master.
There’s no discouragement
Shall make him once relent
His first avowed intent to be a pilgrim.
PRAYERS
The Celebrant says to the People
Let us pray.
The People kneel.
2. Who so beset him round with dismal stories,
Do but themselves confound,
His strength the more is.
No foes shall stay his might,
Though he with giants fight;
He will make good his right to be a pilgrim.
3. Since, Lord, thou dost defend us with thy Spirit,
We know we at the end shall life inherit.
Then fancies flee away! I’ll fear not what men say,
I’ll labor night and day to be a pilgrim.
Into thy hands, O Lord, we commend thy servant Susan, our dear sister, as into the hands of a faithful Creator and
most merciful Savior, beseeching thee that she may be precious in thy sight. Wash her, we pray thee, in the blood of
that immaculate Lamb that was slain to take away the sins of the world; that, whatsoever defilements she may have
contracted in the midst of this earthly life being purged and done away, she may be presented pure and without spot
before thee; through the merits of Jesus Christ thine only Son our Lord. Amen.
Almighty God, Father of mercies and giver of all comfort: Deal graciously, we pray thee, with all those who mourn,
that casting every care on thee, they may know the consolation of thy love; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, we pray thee to set thy passion, cross, and death, between thy judgment
and our souls, now and in the hour of our death. Give mercy and grace to the living, pardon and rest to the dead, to
thy holy Church peace and concord, and to us sinners everlasting life and glory; who with the Father and the Holy
Spirit livest and reignest, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
THE PEACE
The Celebrant says to the People
The peace of the Lord be always with you.
People And with thy spirit.
