I
WILL magnify thee, O God, my King;* and I will praise thy Name for ever and ever.
2 Every day will I give thanks unto thee;* and praise thy Name for ever and ever.
3 Great is the Lord, and marvellous worthy to be praised;* there is no end of his
greatness.
4 One generation shall praise thy works unto another,* and declare thy power.
5 As for me, I will be talking of thy worship,* thy glory, thy praise, and wondrous
works;
6 So that men shall speak of the might of thy marvellous acts;* and I will also tell of
thy greatness.
7 The memorial of thine abundant kindness shall be shewed;* and men shall sing of
thy righteousness.
8 The Lord is gracious and merciful;* long-suffering, and of great goodness.
9 The Lord is loving unto every man;* and his mercy is over all his works.
10 All thy works praise thee, O Lord;* and thy saints give thanks unto thee.
11 They shew the glory of thy kingdom,* and talk of thy power;
12 That thy power, thy glory, and mightiness of thy kingdom,* might be known unto
men.
20 The Lord preserveth all them that love him;* but scattereth abroad all the ungodly.
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son,* and to the Holy Ghost;
As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be,* world without end. Amen.

Prayer Series: “Father”
At the Offering, Anthem Orlando Gibbons
S
EE, see, the Word is incarnate;
God is made man in the womb of a Virgin.
Shepherds rejoice, wise men adore and angels sing:
Glory be to God on high: peace on earth, goodwill towards men.
The law is cancelled, Jews and Gentiles all converted
by the preaching of glad tidings of salvation.
The blind have sight and cripples have their motion;
diseases cured, the dead are raised, and miracles are wrought.
Let us welcome such a guest with hosanna.
The Paschal Lamb is offered, Christ Jesus made a sacrifice for sin.
The earth quakes, the sun is darkened, the powers of hell are shaken;
and lo, He is risen up in victory.
Sing Alleluia.
See, O see, the fresh wounds, the goring blood, the pricks of thorns,
the print of nails; and in the sight of multitudes a glorious ascension.
Where now He sits on God‟s right hand,
where all the choir of heaven jointly sing:
Glory be to the Lamb that sitteth on the throne.
Let us continue our wonted note with Hosanna:
blessed be he that cometh in the Name of the Lord;
with Alleluia; we triumph in victory:
the serpent‟s head bruised, Christ‟s kingdom exalted,
and heaven laid open to sinners. Amen.
MUSIC NOTES
The Missa Brevis by Jonathan Dove was commissioned by the Cathedral
Organists‟ Association for performance during their conference in Wells on 13 May
2009. Dove‟s musical style is tonal, direct and has often been linked with the expressive
minimalism of John Adams. The Gloria features short rhythmically-driven phrases
supported by a moto perpetuo organ accompaniment. Minimalist ideas pervade the
Sanctus and Benedictus. A bright, brilliant opening of dissonant note clusters leads to
minimalist falling phrase (evocative of Steve Reich), which are then both combined. The
Agnus Dei draws on more reflective moments, cadencing on a consonant chord.
We are delighted to welcome the distinguished British viol consort Fretwork
to accompany the choir at Evensong today.

ADULT CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
The Sunday class continues with Parochial and Plain Sermons of John Henry
Newman. Today‟s sermon is one that Newman gave on Septuagesima: “Many called,
few chosen”; next Sunday, on Sexagesima, “Endurance, the Christian‟s portion”: on the
fifth floor of the Parish House at 10 a.m.
Tuesday, February 7, “Church History” is the topic for the Rector‟s Christian Doctrine
Class: in Andrew Hall, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
What are the implications of Christ‟s resurrection being in the flesh? Can we make any
sense of such a notion, without putting “heaven” someplace within the created world?
Wednesday, February 8, the Ascension Theology class looks at the physical resurrection
of Christ as understood by St. Irenaeus: in Andrew Hall, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.

The critically-acclaimed memoir of Cuban refugee Carlos Eire, Learning to Die in
Miami, is up next for the Good Books and Good Talk seminar. “If one can recall how
one learned to die, and remember dying again and again, then death has no right to be
absolute.” If you read the book, you‟re welcome to the conversation: Thursday, February
23.
Newcomers and visitors are welcome to drop in on our classes.
