HYMN Once in royal David’s city All stand. IRBY
Chorister Only:
1. Once in royal David’s city
Stood a lowly cattle shed,
Where a mother laid her baby
In a manger for his bed:
Mary was that mother mild,
Jesus Christ her little child.
Choir Only:
2. He came down to earth from heaven,
Who is God and Lord of all,
And his shelter was a stable,
And his cradle was a stall;
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Saviour holy.
All:
3. And, through all his wondrous childhood,
He would honor and obey,
Love, and watch the lowly maiden
In whose gentle arms he lay;
Christian children all must be
Mild, obedient, good as he.
THE BLESSING OF THE CRECHE
Cecil Frances Alexander
All:
4. For he is our childhood’s pattern;
Day by day like us he grew;
He was little, weak, and helpless,
Tears and smiles like us he knew;
And he feeleth for our sadness,
And he shareth in our gladness.
All:
5. And our eyes at last shall see him,
Through his own redeeming love;
For that child so dear and gentle
Is our Lord in heaven above;
And he leads his children on
To the place where he is gone.
The image of the child Jesus is brought to the Crèche.
All:
6. Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see him; but in heaven,
Set at God’s right hand on high;
When like stars his children crowned,
All in white shall wait around.
HYMN Please kneel and join in the singing of the Hymn STILLE NACHT
“A clean maiden, a pure virgin, By her humility Shall now conceive the Person Second in Deity.”
When that he presented was Before her fair visage,
In most demure and goodly wise He did to her homage;
And said, “Lady, from heaven so high, That Lordés heritage, For he of thee now born will be; I’m sent on his message.”
Hail, virgin celestial The meek’st that ever was! Hail temple of the Deity!
Hail, mirror of all grace! Hail virgin pure!
CAROL All my heart this night rejoices Johann Georg Ebeling
(1637-1676)
arranged by Leo Nestor
(b. 1948)
All my heart this night rejoices
As I hear, Far and near, Sweetest angel voices.
“Christ is born!” their choirs are singing,
Till the air Everywhere Now with joy is ringing.
Hark! a voice from yonder manger,
Soft and sweet, Doth entreat, “Flee from woe and danger!
Brethren come! from all doth grieve you,
You are freed; All you need I will surely give you.”
Paul Gerhardt
Thee, dear Lord, with heed I’ll cherish;
Live to thee, And with thee, Dying shall not perish.
But shall dwell with thee for ever,
Far on high, In the joy That shall alter never.
Come, then, let us hasten yonder!
AT THE OFFERING, CAROL Personent hodie arranged by John Rutter
(b. 1945)
Personent hodie
On this day, earth shall ring
Voces puerulae,
with the song children sing
Laudantes jucunde
to the Lord, Christ our King,
Qui nobis est natus,
born on Earth to save us;
Summo Deo datus,
him the Father gave us.
Et de virgineo ventre procreatus.
And created from the womb of the Virgin.
In mundo nascitur,
Pannis involvitur,
Praesepi ponitur
Stabulo brutorum,
Rector supernorum,
Perdidit spolia princeps infernorum.
Magis tres venerunt.
Parvullum inquirunt,
Bethlehem adeunt,
Stellulam sequendo,
Ipsum adorando
Aurum, thus, et myrrham ei offerendo.
Omnes clericuli,
Pariter pueri,
Cantent ut angeli:
Advenisti mundo,
Laudes tibi fundo
Ideo gloria in excelsis Deo
from Piae Cantiones (1582)
4
His the doom, ours the mirth;
when he came down to earth,
Bethlehem saw his birth;
ox and ass beside him
from the cold would hide him.
The Prince thwarted the intrigues of hell.
God’s bright star, o’er his head,
Wise Men three to him led;
kneel they low by his bed,
lay their gifts before him,
praise him and adore him.
Offering him gold, incense and myrrh.
On this day angels sing;
with their song earth shall ring
praising Christ, heaven’s King,
born on earth to save us;
peace and love he gave us.
Likewise glory to God in the highest.
CAROL How far is it to Bethlehem? arranged by Simon Lindley
(b. 1948)
How far is it to Bethlehem? Not very far.
Shall we find the stable-room lit by a star?
Can we see the little Child, is He within?
If we lift the wooden latch, may we go in?
May we stroke the creatures there, ox, ass, or sheep?
May we peep like them, and see Jesus asleep?
If we touch His tiny hand will He awake?
Will He know we’ve come so far just for His sake?
Great kings have precious gifts, and we have naught;
Little smiles and little tears are all we brought.
For all weary children Mary must weep.
Here, on His bed for straw, sleep, children, sleep.
God in His mother’s arms, babes in the byre,
Sleep, as they sleep who find their heart’s desire.
Frances Chesterton
Saint Thomas Sunday School classes are in recess until Sunday, January 9, when classes will resume for all youth
Basic Christianity: The Rector's Christian Doctrine Class begins on Tuesday, January 11. This is a good course for
anyone who would like to study basic matters: Trinity, Incarnation, Bible, sacraments, history, the Episcopal Church, and
so forth. It will meet most Tuesdays through early May, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Besides being a good overview of
Christian faith and practices, the doctrine class is preparation, for those who want it, for confirmation or reception in the
Episcopal Church.
"What's Up with Authority?" Father Austin will give this public lecture on Wednesday, January 19, at 6:30 p.m. How
does authority help us flourish as human beings? Is it a good thing even when it errs? This lecture will not presuppose
any particular study of the topic, and it is open to the public.
Please visit our website at www.SaintThomasChurch.org for a complete calendar of all worship services, classes and
other events.
