MUSIC NOTES
Arthur Wills was born in Coventry, England, and studied at the College of St.
Nicholas in Canterbury. Almost his whole professional career has been associated with
Ely Cathedral, first as Sub-Organist and then as Organist from 1958-1990. He also held a
Professorship at the Royal Academy of Music from 1964-1992. A prolific composer of
choral and organ music, his Short Communion Service was composed in 1961. As the
title suggests, the work is a concise and practical setting of the Mass, scored for men‟s
voices in three parts. The reduced scoring lends the music an austere and ethereal
quality, notable for its economy of gesture.
sixteen boys to sing the services and, with few breaks, the Choir has been singing in the
Chapel from 1443 to the present day. The current Choir is formed from boys of the
school (with one or two masters), most of whom have been choristers at Cathedrals or
Chapels prior to coming to Eton for their secondary education. The boys arrive at
thirteen years of age and remain at Eton for five years. The choral tradition is maintained
by the regular singing of school services and occasional Evensongs throughout the term
time.
