Chapter 1 is an overview of basic noÉions in stylistic<br />

analysis and of Lhe aims of a study based on sÉylisÉic<br />

principies; it is also a discussion of LLe notion of literariness<br />

trom Lhe perspective of various linguistic Éheories, such as<br />

systemic linguistics, pragmatics, scherna Lheory and possible<br />

worlds Lheory, with an indication of Lhe contributions Lhat each<br />

of Lhe Lheories has Lo make Lo Lhe un<strong>de</strong>rsLanding of literary<br />

discourse. The final sections of the chapter focus on Lhe novel<br />

Catch-22 and are inten<strong>de</strong>d Lo provi<strong>de</strong> a background regarding the<br />

main themes of the novel, its situation wiLhin contemporary<br />

fiction and Lhe contributions of Lhe present work wiLh regard Lo<br />

previous works on Catch-22.<br />

Lo psychology, grammar, and discourse and pragmaLic theories. TIia<br />

preliminary discussions on philosophical and psychological<br />

discussion of Lhe Lhesis as a whole, because they provi<strong>de</strong><br />

insighLs regarding basic properties of negation which can also<br />

be observed when approaching negation from a discourse<br />

perspective. The sections on the grammatical aspects of negation<br />

establish what are negative words and whaL are Lhe semantic<br />

properties of negation. The second parÉ of Lhe chapter is <strong>de</strong>voted<br />
