LA BELLE DAME SANS MERCI
(1819)
This is a romantic ballad where the meeting between a knight
and a beautiful lady becomes metaphor of illness and
consummation. The title comes from an old French court
poem by Alain Chartier (1385-1433).
O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms,
Alone and palely loitering?
The sedge is wither'd from the lake,
And no birds sing.
O what can ail thee, knight-at-arms,
So haggard and so woe-begone?
The squirrel's granary is full,
And the harvest's done.
