defense of 1999 Phoenix Open with rounds of 67-70-67-67<br />

and finished T2...Following his victory, went to <strong>PGA</strong><br />

Championship with high hopes but chair he was sitting in<br />

on clubhouse patio collapsed, he hit his head on a railing<br />

and wrenched his shoulder, neck and wrist in the fall. He<br />

withdrew after opening 77. 1999: Made clear comeback<br />

from 1994 back surgery with victory at the Phoenix Open in<br />

lead of six strokes. Final-round 71 earned him twostroke<br />

victory over Justin Leonard. 1997: Made eight consecutive<br />

cuts near end of the year to retain full exempt status.<br />

1996: Returned to <strong>TOUR</strong> under special medical extension<br />

and tied for sixth at Phoenix Open to earn $42,088 and<br />

regain full playing privileges. Had three other top-10s,<br />

including T4 at THE PLAYERS Championship, where he<br />

became the first player to birdie the final six holes at the<br />

TPC Sawgrass on his way to a final-round 66. 1994: Missed<br />

most of season with ruptured disk, for which he underwent<br />

surgery in July. 1993: Second win came in playoff at Kmart<br />

Elkington. 1991: Earned first title in sixth season at Doral-<br />

Ryder Open. Sank 10-foot birdie putts on 71st and 72nd<br />

holes, forcing playoff with Curtis Strange. In Monday playoff,<br />

birdied first extra hole from 5 feet. Victory was one of<br />

six top-10s in his first seven starts of the year. 1990: Finalround<br />

66 jumped him into a T2 at the Canon Greater<br />

Hartford Open, two strokes back of Wayne Levi. 1987: T2,<br />

one stroke behind John Inman, at the Provident Classic.<br />

Gained interest in golf in high school after years of playing<br />

baseball...With help from Champions Tour member Jim<br />

Ferree during college, began to construct his swing...At<br />

Florida Southern, coach Charlie Matlock became large<br />

influence on his game...Started using long putter to save<br />

his back and became the first player to win on <strong>TOUR</strong> using<br />

a long putter when he won the 1991 Doral-Ryder<br />

Open...Finished 600th out of 5,619 players in his first<br />

appearance at the 2005 World Series of Poker's Main<br />

Event. Began playing in 2004.<br />
