DuraComm embarked on a strategic business initiative
to make its new facility more energy efficient. One major
project involved the design and installation of a 24.80 KW
Photovoltaic system, which is designed to produce more
than 34,000 KWH of energy per year and offset the building’s
lighting load of 31,500 KWH. The building is in the process of
being retrofitted with DuraComm LED lighting equipment.
The entire building’s energy usage is monitored by a wireless
smart metering system, distributed by DuraComm. The
project’s financial benefits analysis includes a projected
25 year utility savings of $193,883, Return On Investment
(ROI) of 4.8 years and and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) of
14.3%. The KCP&L Solar Rebate of $2.00 a watt and Federal
Investment Tax Credit of 30%, as well as MACRS Depreciation
Schedule with 100% bonus depreciation contributed to
developing the business justification to invest in solar.
