Picked by a judging panel comprising NUSS Advisory Panel members Mr Gerard Ee and Mr Wong Ah Long; and NUSS President Mr Johnny Tan, three luminary NUSS members were selected for both awards. “Tonight, we gather to recognise the contributions and celebrate the outstanding accomplishments of some of our longstanding members. In particular, we will be presenting the NUSS Distinguished and Outstanding Members Awards to three of our members who have made significant and lasting contributions to NUSS and the wider community,” 14 THE GRADUATE Jul-Sep 2011 Guests toasting to Mr Gopinath Pillai’s recognition as NUSS Distinguished Member.
said NUSS President Mr Johnny Tan, in his opening speech. Indeed, the three selected recipients have made significant contributions to the Society and Singapore in their own ways. Mr Gopinath Pillai, recipient of the Distinguished Member Award, for instance, played a pivotal role in persuading the Development Bank of Singapore (DBS) to finance the construction of the old Kent Ridge Guild House (KRGH) during the Society’s early days. Most significantly, he helped to successfully secure the members’ mandate to increase the entrance fee from a mere S$15 to $2,000. That helped bring in close to 1,800 members and added $1.8 million to NUSS’ development fund. “I feel very honoured and very privileged. I never expected this so I’m very happy. Very touched,” says Mr Pillai. Likewise, Mr Ernest Wong Thian Yow, recipient of the Outstanding Member Award, was instrumental in shaping NUSS to what it is today. During his tenure as President from 1971 to 1973, he personally oversaw the completion of the Evans Road Guild House by tapping on his contacts for building materials and manpower resources. “I feel very honoured. As far as I’m concerned, I am just an ordinary member,” says Mr Wong. Another recipient of the Outstanding Member Award is Professor (Dr) James Newton Boss. Professor (Dr) Boss joined NUSS in 1983 and was involved in the Community Care, Community Service and Membership Sub-Committees as well as the Orchard Guild House Steering Committee. He was also the Chairperson of the 50th Anniversary NUSS Lecture and is currently serving in the Intellectual Pursuit Sub-Committee and the Editorial Panel. “Receiving this award today is another milestone for me into my collection. That’s one of those things I look forward to – my contribution towards society,” says Professor (Dr) Boss.
