HIgHlIgHts <strong>NUss</strong> Karaoke Competition 2011 Females ruled at this year’s competition sweeping all top three awards <strong>NUss</strong> KARAoKE CompEtItIoN 2011 Date: 21 March 2011 Venue: Kent Ridge Guild House Although there were equal numbers of male and female contestants at this year’s NUSS Karaoke Competition, the women proved to be the hot favourites by making a clean sweep for all the top three award categories. Ms Chen Jing Wen emerged winner while Ms Chiu Kai Ling and Ms Janice Goh were the first runner-up and second runner-up respectively. “It was great. I thought it was a tough fight between the first runner-up and second runner-up,” says Ms Chen. Ms Chen admits she had no formal training but has been joining the competition ever since she became an NUSS member. “We have regular singers over at Suntec City Guild House. We sing at least once a week over there,” says Ms Chen on how she prepared for the competition. According to Mr Jeffery Khoo, convenor for the Karaoke Section, this year’s competition saw changes in the scheduling of the different singing categories. “For this year, there was a change. The previous two years, we had a separate English and Chinese competition. This year, we merged both together,” says Mr Khoo. Judges, comprising Mr Archie Ong, Mr Desmond Wang and Ms Zhuang Su Feye, based their decisions on each contestant’s voice quality and diction. The NUSS Karaoke Competition is an annual competition open to members. the Karaoke section is a newly established interest group for Karaoke enthusiasts. It hopes to identify talented individuals and provide them with opportunities to perform at the Society’s functions and events. That so many of us have problems with our back should come as no surprise when you realise what a complex structure the backbone is. Stretching from the base of the skull to just above the buttocks, the backbone is made up of 33 vertebrae, more than 30 muscles, numerous ligaments, multiple joints, and connecting or intervertebral discs. With so many parts making up the spine, things can easily go wrong. Discounting injury from accidents, most back pain stems from daily activity A dull ache in the upper back, for example, can be caused by sitting at the computer for hours on end without proper back support. This is mostly from muscle strain, and most people recover after six weeks – provided the problem is not aggravated by the same old habits. However, the most distressing form of back pain by far is lower back pain, as it involves more than just muscle. Lower back pain is a very common complaint for a simple reason. Since the lowest part of the spine, the lumbar spine, is connected to your pelvis, it is where most of your weight-bearing and body movement take place. Also known as a herniated disc or prolapsed intervertebral disc (PID), it is a condition when the core of one of the discs between the vertebrae protrudes through a tear in its covering. The good news is that good habits, including correct posture, can reduce your chances of this troublesome ailment. How to tell if your slipped disc is serious • The pain is aggravated when you bend in any direction. • It lasts a long time, and is not relieved by standard types of medical management. • There’s numbness, burning or a pins-and-needles sensation in the legs. • You find it difficult to pass urine, or have little control urinating.
