Earth Day Challenge
As Earth Day approaches,
the Natural Resources
Council of Maine (NRCM)
is inviting Maine elementary
school age kids to create
images of a pollution-free
world, in honor of Earth Day
and Rachel Carson’s contribution
to a cleaner environment.
The artworks may be in
2-colors and up to 8.5” by
11” and will be featured in
a slide show on NRCM’s
website at www.nrcm.org. In
addition, artwork submitted
will automatically be considered
for use as an image
on a tee-shirt for NRCM’s
5k and kid’s “fun run” event
in October, to honor the anniversary
of the publication
of the book, Silent Spring.
The event, dubbed “Rachel’s
Run and Kids’ Fun,” will
raise funds for and awareness
about NRCM’s ongoing
work to keep toxic chemicals
out of Maine’s air, water,
wildlife, and forests.
Silent Spring, by Rachel
Carson, helped launch the
environmental movement
and changed our society by
FOR YOU!
Last year’s winning art work by Augusta fourth grader,
Katie Boston, appeared on dozens of t-shirts and other
promotional material
illustrating the connection of
human beings with all other
life around us. Rachel Carson
demonstrated the effects of
dangerous chemicals, most
notably the pesticide DDT,
on the environment, particularly
on birds. Bald eagles
and other species suffered
huge population declines as
a result of this poison.
Submissions for the
Earth Day slideshow may
be mailed or dropped off, by
the end of April, to the Natural
Miller Receives National Recognition
Timothy A. Churchill,
President and Chief
Executive Officer of
Western Maine Health is
pleased to announce that
Lisa Miller, MD of Western
Maine Family Practice was
recently named to the list of
physicians earning a three
year recognition from the
National Committee for
Quality Assurance (NCQA)
through the Heart/Stroke
Recognition Program
(HSRP), beginning in
January 2013.
The Heart/Stroke
Recognition Program was
designed to improve the
quality of care that patients
with cardiovascular disease
or who have had a stroke
receive by recognizing
clinicians who deliver quality
cardiovascular and stroke
care, and by motivating
other clinicians to document
and improve their delivery
of cardiovascular and
stroke care. To receive
recognition, which is valid
for three years, Dr. Lisa
Miller submitted data that
demonstrates performance
that meets the Program's
key cardiovascular and
stroke care measures.
These measures include
blood pressure and
cholesterol control, among
others. When people with
cardiovascular disease or
who have had a stroke receive
quality care as outlined by
these measures, they are less
likely to suffer additional
complications, such as
a second heart attack or
stroke. “Quality patient care
translates into lives saved,”
said Sidney Smith, Professor
of Medicine, University of
South Carolina at Chapel
Hill and Past President
and Past Chief Science
Officer of the American
Heart Association. “This is
why the American Heart
Association/American
Stroke Association is
supporting a recognition
program for clinicians
providing quality care.
This program closes
the gap by putting into
practice American Health
Association/American
Stroke Association
guidelines and statements
to fight heart disease and
stroke. Dr. Miller has
been on the Medical Staff
at Stephens Memorial
Hospital since 2007.
