Underground Railroad Presented
Connie Benwitz of
Minot recently briefed the
Hebron Historical Society
on the use of quilts in the
Underground Railroad. As
a quilt maker and former
librarian she became fascinated
with the history of
quilts assisting the journey
of slaves escaping southern
plantations. As most
slaves did not have the
opportunity of learning to
read and write they had to
depend on signals for safe
passage in their escape
north and into Canada.
Quilts of various designs
were hung at homes assisting
the escapees, each
of which giving direction,
modes of travel or indi-
cating a “safe house” (as
pictured above). Numerous
designs ,duplicated
by Ms Benwitz, were
presented and detailed.
Underground Railroad
locations and routes have
been documented since
the beginning of the 19th
century, many of which
are in Maine. n
Lots of Reasons to Love Chickens
The silver laced wyandotte is a beautiful
distinct bird that’s easy to care for.
The world loves eggs.
High in protein and low in
fat, eggs might be the perfect
food. The only thing
better than eggs is fresh
eggs and they don’t get any
fresher than when they’re
laid today. It’s not surprising
that more and more
people are getting their
eggs from their own back
yard.
As you drive the back
roads of Maine, especially
now that warmer weather
is upon us, you see more
chickens and birds than
ever before. Chickens are
about the easiest animals to
care for and the low cost of
a large bag of chicken feed
help ensure affordable eggs
all year round.
Free ranging chickens
spend warm weather scouring
your property for pests
and insects. A friend of
mine attests that since he
got his chickens, his dog
hasn’t had one tick. With
increased fears of Lyme
you need to succeed!
Disease in our area, chickens
provide an extra level
of security for family and
pets while reducing toxins
and other pesticides needed
on your property.
This type of omnivore
diet helps ensure the quality
of your eggs. When
your chicken’s are outside
eating the bounty of nature,
they are also depositing
great fertilizer on your
lawn. Quick clean ups of
the hen house make a great
addition to compost piles
and family gardens.
Taking care of chickens
is also a fun, educational
chore for children. Feeding,
watering and collecting
eggs can be done in
just a few minutes and offers
a regular activity that
families can do together.
Perhaps you’re looking
for something a little more
exotic for your property
than chickens. Paris Farmers
