Underground Railroad Presented
Connie Benwitz of
Minot recently briefed the
Hebron Historical Society
on the use of quilts in the
Underground Railroad. As
a quilt maker and former
librarian she became fascinated
with the history of
quilts assisting the journey
of slaves escaping southern
plantations. As most
slaves did not have the
opportunity of learning to
read and write they had to
depend on signals for safe
passage in their escape
north and into Canada.
Quilts of various designs
were hung at homes assisting
the escapees, each
of which giving direction,
modes of travel or indi-
cating a “safe house” (as
pictured above). Numerous
designs ,duplicated
by Ms Benwitz, were
presented and detailed.

the beginning of the 19th
century, many of which
are in Maine. n
