WEATHERING - These ore two main results of weathering: mechanical
disintegration and chemical decampos ition2 - Generally, both
effects act together but, depending on the climate. one may ba
dominant. Chemical alteration alshoufi not a form of weathering
may also be considered hare. Mechanical veatherfng results in
the opening of discontinuities. the forming of new fractures,
the opening of grain boundaries and the fracture of mineral
grains. Chemical weathering results En discolouration of rock
and leads to the eventual decomposition of silicate minerals to
clay minerals, The state of weathering can be described
according to the following table.
BIZ pescrivtlon Grade
Fresh Po visible sign o f rock material
weathering: perhaps slight dis-
colouration on major discontfnuity
surfaces.
Slightly Discolouration indicates weathering If
weathered of rock material and discontinuity
surfaces. All the rock material may
be discoloured by weathering and may be
somewhat weaker externally than in its
fresh condition.
Moderately
weathered
Highly
weathered
Completely
weathered
Residual
soil
Zess than half of the rock oxaterial is If1
decomposed and/or dksintegreted to a soil.
Fresh or discoloured rack is present either
as a e~ntknu~us framework or as carestones.
Hore than half of the rock material
is decomposed and/or diskntegrated to
a soil. Fresh or discoloured rock is
present either as a continuous frame-
work or as corestones.
All rock material is deeomposcd
andfor dia tntegrated to a soil.
The original mass structure is still
largely intact. All rock material is
converted t o sofl. The miss structure
and material fabric are destroyed. There
is a large change in volume, but the soil
has not been significantly transported.
