Foothill Moments Foothill Moment #1 Description I am quite an introvert person and I tend often to have problems to express my opinion in group discussion rounds What was draining or unsatisfying Being not able to contribute something to the discussion round and feeling uncomfortable. Though, during this time I have the chance to follow the discussion and think intensively what I could say and in most of the cases I am able to do so. But in general it takes me a bit longer to contribute something. Actually, I had to stay in Munich for my internship, but I managed to take off a week to stay and help them. Self Study 3b Exercise 4 Doing business is all about being successful. The most important part are the financial results. Those results are obviously influenced by certain costs, which depend on the city or country a company is doing their business. In the following, London and Beijing are being compared. The factors to consider are the most essential costs, like costs for accommodation or renting an office to have a place to do business. To stay one night in a five star hotel has almost the same costs in both of the cities, even though Beijing is a little cheaper. As opposed to this fact, the monthly rent for an apartment in Beijing is twice as high as in London. One square meter of office space in Beijing, therefore, costs one tenth of the price a company would have to pay in London. The wage for a bilingual secretary, who could work for the company in this office in Beijing is 25% of the wage for a secretary in London. As this secretary would do a five minute local phone call, the costs in London would be approx. 30% higher than in Beijing. Exercise 6 At meetings with Chinese, the leader of your group will be expected to enter first and will generally be offered a seat beside the most senior Chinese person present. This person will usually chair the meeting and act as a host. At the beginning of the meeting, all the people present will greet each other and swap business cards, after which a period of small talk begins. The host will then officially start the proceedings with a brief introduction to the Chinese enterprise. The visiting team is then invited to speak. It is appropriate at this point for the foreign participants to make their case and answer questions. Following the meeting, the Chinese enterprise will probably arrange a special dinner for the overseas guests along with other entertainment such as sightseeing. The guests should always accept these invitations as a small talk in a social setting is essential for forging relationships with the Chinese.
