Thank you for considering Calderdale College to 

continue your education. I realise it is an important 

decision for you. When you are looking at your 

options, it is worth knowing exactly what we 

provide. 

We have over 100 years experience in providing 

vocational courses and work based learning to 

develop specialist skills to assist you in starting 

your working career. We also have a network of 

over 300 employers with whom we engage to 

provide work experience, real life projects, job 

opportunities and apprenticeship places. This is 

very important as you move on from College and 

into employment. 

Just as important is the fact that our success rates 

are the highest they have ever been which means 

more and more of our learners are successfully 

completing their courses with us. Ofsted recently 

recognised that we are ‘a good College with 

outstanding features’ too. We have achieved this 

through having highly experienced and committed 

staff, high quality advice, guidance and care for 

students and developing a wide range of courses 

including many apprenticeships.

Choosing your Course 

If you’re not sure which course is right for you, 

take a look at the chart on the pages 10-11. 

Calderdale College has a set of standard entry 

requirements. Never be deterred by any lack 

of formal qualifications or by not meeting the 

entry requirements. apply for the course you 

want to study and we will help you get there. 

In many cases and for a variety of reasons 

entry requirements can be waived at the 

College’s discretion. 

There are lots of courses available—work 

focused, practical or academic, so it’s 

important to think about the future — whether 

you want to go to uni, move onto another 

course or get a job. If you’re still not sure, 

don’t worry, just speak to one of our student 

advisers and we’ll help you out. Call student 

services on 01422 399367. 

Qualifications – what does it 

all mean? 

What are BTECs? 

BTeCs are vocational and occupationally 

relevant courses which help you gain 

knowledge and vocationally specific skills. 

They are well recognised by employers and 

universities. achieving a BTeC National 

qualification over two years is the equivalent 

of doing 3 a levels Grade a-e. achieving a 

BTeC First is the equivalent of doing 5 GCses 

Grade a*-C. achieving a BTeC Introductory 

diploma is the equivalent of 5 GCses Grades 

d-G. all courses are primarily taught through 

assignment work and case studies and are 

tested through assignments and time-limited 

assessments. BTeC awards and Certificates are 

accreditation for completing some units but not 

the full diploma. 

What are Functional skills? 

When asked, employers and universities 

tell us how important it is for people to have 

good skills in communication, working with 

numbers, and information communication 

technology skills, as well as being able to 

work in teams and solve problems. This is why 

these Functional skills are an important part of 

your course and why all our learners work on 

improving these skills and gaining Functional 

skills qualifications whilst they are following 

their vocational learning programme. 

The level of Functional skills you follow 

depends upon your GCse results and the 

results of an assessment you will complete 

when you join College. like all classes in 

College, attendance at Functional skills classes 

is a requirement to prepare you to pass the 

Functional skills tests, and the completion of a 

portfolio which shows your skills is part of your 

vocational course. 

every learner has a personal tutor and follows 

a personal tutorial programme. The activities 

that are organised within this part of your 

course includes working in teams and groups 

and this enables you to achieve an additional 

Key skill called Working With Others. 

For those who wish to progress to university, 

Functional skills contribute UCas points that 

are recognised in all universities. 

What are NVQs? 

NVQs are job-specific, competence based 

qualifications. NVQs reflect the skills and 

knowledge needed to do a job effectively. They 

are available to anyone at any age or stage of 

their career development. 

The central feature of NVQs is the National 

Occupational standards (NOs) on which 

they are based. NOs are statements of 

performance standards that describe 

what competent people in a particular 

occupation are expected to be able to 

do. They cover all the main aspects of an 

occupation, including current best practice, 

the ability to adapt to future requirements 

and the knowledge and understanding that 

underpins competent performance. 


What are Apprenticeships? 

Young people aged between 16 and 24 can 

earn while they learn on an apprenticeship 

and there is a wide range of training 

opportunities to suit your ability and job 

preferences. By working to a structured 

training plan and gaining work experience you 

will achieve an apprenticeship framework that 

reflects your ability. 

Functional skills are a requirement for an 

apprenticeship framework and an expectation 

within other courses. If you have not achieved 

GCse Grades C or above in english, maths or 

ICT then you will work on these skills with help 

from your vocational tutor so that you achieve 

at least a level 2 in all areas which is the level 

required to be effective in work and to access 

higher level courses. 

What are VRQs 

VrQs are practical courses that are usually 

assessed by tests and course work. They are 

available in work-related subjects such as 

hairdressing and are more job specific than 

other qualifications. Whilst studying a VrQ 

you will gain knowledge, understanding and 

skills for a broad area of work or range of jobs. 

Special entry requirements: 

some courses require special entry 

requirements, such as: 

a Criminal records Bureau enhanced 

disclosure, references, the completion of a 

dexterity test, attainment in a pre-course 

diagnostic assessment (including testing for 

colour blindness), age criteria (over 18, under 

24 etc), for you to be in training in a job, or be 

successful at an audition or interview. 

The admissions team can help you identify 

whether you meet the entry requirements and 

the College can advise prior to an admissions 

event, what evidence may be required. should 

you be interviewed at an admissions event 

and not be successful in receiving an offer for 

the course you applied for, you will be directed 

onto an alternative level that will prepare you 

to progress.

DESCRIPTION/ENTRY REQUIREMENTS 

These courses are designed to allow students 

who may not reach the grades to study for a 

level 1 qualifi cation. some courses at this level 

are tailored for people with learning diffi culties 

or where english is not their fi rst language. 

an introductory course to a subject. school 

leavers should aim for at least 4 GCses at 

Grade e–G. It may be an entry requirement for 

some courses that your GCses should include 

mathematics and/or english. 

an intermediate course suitable for you if 

you have at least 4 GCses at Grades d or a 

relevant/equivalent level 1 qualifi cation. This 

could be a BTeC introductory diploma, a City & 

Guilds qualifi cation or a NVQ level 1. 

It may be an entry requirement for some 

courses that your GCses should include maths 

and/or english at Grade d or above. 

an advanced course suitable for those with 

at least 5 GCses at grades a*–C or a relevant 

level 2 qualifi cation such as a BTeC First 

diploma, NVQ level 2 or equivalent/relevant

The best part of my last course was the fun we had

relaxed relaxed with with us and and picked picked out out some some awesome awesome tasks tasks 

for us to do. On my current course I love working for 

myself and the work I do helps me with my career 

as I have the chance to work with real companies. 

The The highlight highlight has has to be be the the catwalk catwalk on on my my fi rst rst year year 

when I walked down the catwalk in my own hoodie 

I was quite nervous but after that I was then asked 

to wear someone else’s he had created a batman 

hoodie and my friend walk down the catwalk in a robot 

hoodie, I have to say I have never laughed so much 

in my life. The main facilities I use is learning room 4 

A.K.A Mac suite, I have to say I have spent three years 

in there and I’ve loved every moment, it also has Macs 

with all the programs I need to get through my course 

and the room id love to spend some more time in is 

the media room which has brand new everything to 

get the art and design department up and ready for 

anything. Help and support is always there for you 

if you ask for it, I know this I needed help with my 

writing tasks and there was group meetings on how 

to write essays, and other things like that. I have held 

end of year exhibitions and I have also learnt how to 

keep to a deadline, my main achievement is how I’ve 

been able to do my courses and get through them with 

my triple merit on the fi rst course.

Opened in September 2011, the 

College has some fantastic sports 

facilities including a full size 3G 

pitch, sports hall and climbing wall. 

The facilities include: Basketball, 

netball, 5-a-side football, 

volleyball, badminton, korfball, 

indoor cricket, table tennis, 

trampolining and climbing wall. 

Gym & FItness Centre 

Opened in September 2011, our 

fully equipped gym is open all the 

year round including weekends 

and is available to our learners 

to use. An instructor is always 

on duty to help you work out a 

fitness programme too! Classes 

in yoga, aerobics and circuit 

training are run regularly as well 

as women only sessions. Students 

on a sport and leisure course can 

gain instruction and supervisory 

experience here. 

DanCe stuDIo 

Opened in September 2011, our 

Dance Studio is fully equipped 

with a sprung floor, ballet bars 

and mirrors.

Our Empty Space Theatre

the Full Works: 

haIr anD Beauty salons 

When you feel like a break and a little TLC 

you can always have your hair cut, your 

nails painted, your legs waxed or your back 

massaged at the Full Works, our own hair 

and beauty salons. These are staffed by 

learners on our Hairdressing and Beauty 

Therapy courses and supervised by tutors. 

Our commercial salons are open five days 

a week and treatments are offered at very 

reasonable rates. 

learnInG resourCes Centre 

The Learning Resources Centre is a great 

place to do research, to write up an 

assignment, create a presentation or just 

chill out with a good book. The Library has 

a great selection of books, magazines and 

DVDs to support all courses. We also provide 

electronic books, articles, images and films 

delivered to you via the internet and available 

24/7. There is the opportunity to work on 

your own in our quiet areas or with others. We 

have nearly 100 computers in our Learning 

Zones, all with internet access and Microsoft 

Office software. We also have specialist 

software such as Photoshop, Read and Write 

Gold and Dragon Naturally Speaking on 

selected computers. You can print in black 

and white or colour (all new students receive 

a £5 print allowance). You can copy files to 

your own area on the College network, or to 

USB flash drive, DVD or CD. We also provide 

scanners in each Zone. Our staff are very 

friendly and welcoming and are here to help 

you succeed at College. So come down to the 

LRC and find out how we can help you. 

one Centre 

The One Centre aims to support all Calderdale 

College learners in successfully achieving 

their personal goals during their time at the 

College. This is achieved through providing 

the opportunity to participate in a range of 

activities, whether its learning a new skill, 

organising an activity or trip, taking part in a 

project or socialising with other learners. The 

team work closely with the Student Union to 

support its activities. 

CaFé 

Our new Café opened in September 2011 and 

provides a wide range of cooked breakfasts, 

lunches, sandwiches, snacks and hot and 

cold drinks. Meet your friends, relax in 

between classes or just enjoy your break and 

listen to the radio. You get great choice, and 

competitive prices. Vegetarian options are 

always available and we’ve recently received 

a Healthy Eating award for providing healthy 

food options.

quality training in a community setting; the 

Centre provides an excellent alternative venue 

for vocational courses in a welcoming and

TODMORDEN 

toDmorDen Campus: a Creative art experience 

Todmorden Community College has a thriving community art 

provision catering for all levels and abilities. It delivers a number of 

creative courses from introductory level up to Honours Degree in the 

recently refurbished premises. Starting in September 2011 are new 

Level1 and 2 Art and Design courses for 16-18 year olds. 

The College has a creative, friendly and welcoming atmosphere for 

all its learners. The College also produces exhibitions and sales of 

student work and former students have gone on to a variety of careers 

in the creative industries. 

Our Fine Art facilities in Todmorden, offer learners of all abilities 

the opportunity to explore their creative potential and to identify 

and develop a unique Fine Art Identity. Experienced teaching 

staff, all of which are practicing artists or designers work 

alongside learners in a centre which enjoys a well deserved 

reputation for nurturing excellence in the Arts.

CELEBRATING 

SUCCESS 

StudentS Shine at hair and 

Beauty awardS 

The Hair and Beauty Department of 

Calderdale College celebrated the 

achievement of its students on Level 1, 2 

& 3 Hair & Beauty Courses with an awards 

ceremony at the Shay Stadium. It was the 

College’s opportunity to recognise those 

students who had excelled on their courses. 

The event focussed on the theme of ‘Reach 

for the Stars’ reflecting the progress of the 

students throughout their courses. It was 

evident from the hair styles, glamorous 

outfits, immaculate make up and elaborate 

nail-art that this celebration was all about 

style. ‘Student of the Year’ awards were

There was a chance to celebrate success 

and catch up with old friends for Life Skills 

Learners at their certificate presentation 

event at Calderdale College. Former 

students returned to join those still studying 

at the College as they picked up awards 

for Life Skills and Employability courses 

completed earlier this year. Certificates were 

awarded to Entry Level 1, 2 and 3 learners 

who had achieved qualifications in Personal 

Progress, Personal and Social Development 

and Employability. 

The learners undertook a variety of activities 

to achieve their certificates, from running the 

D café, a Book Club and Trolley Shop to taking 

part in healthy lifestyle activities and local 

environmental projects.

“Investors in Diversity” is awarded by the 

National Centre for Diversity. The College 

had to meet 18 sets of criteria which included

and a half days. Calderdale College 

is the only organisation to hold this 

prestigious award in the Calderdale 

area with the assessor stating:

Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 Electrical Installation 


During the fi rst year an Advanced Apprentice Electrician can expect to assist the electricians 

on site with tasks relating to the installation of electrical systems and equipment. In the 

second year, you will be required to carry out basic tasks under supervision. In the third 

and forth years you will be expected to carry out skilled tasks including installing electrical 

cables and equipment in domestic, commercial and industrial environments, and the visual 

inspection and electrical testing of those installations. The programme involves one day 

a week attendance at College to gain the knowledge for the Technical Certifi cate of the 

qualifi cation. The remainder of your time will be spent on site gathering evidence towards the 

NVQ assessment portfolio.

The Advanced Apprenticeship programme can lead onto specialist short courses, Degree

in a restaurant or bar and be involved in the service and presentation of food and drink. You 

will develop your skills and gaining great work based experience. You will also complete a 

technical certifi cate that will introduce you to the Principles of Hospitality and Catering and 

Key Skills. 

Moving on

What Does a Retail Assistant do? 

As a Retail employee, your role will depend on the needs of the business and your employer 

– you could be assisting customers on the sales floor of a high street store or handling their 

purchases in a small establishment. Alternatively, you could be working in a specialist retail 

outlet becoming a product expert helping with specific queries. A Retail Skills qualification 

offers you the chance to develop new skills and gain recognition for the expertise you already 

possess allowing you to progress your career in the Retail Industry. The qualification is 

assessed in the workplace and offers flexibility in the choice of units to match your job role. 

You will be supported to complete the qualification by an Retail Industry experienced and 

competent Assessor. 

Moving On 

On completion of the Level 2 Certificate you will be given the opportunity to progress onto

As an Apprentice in the Sport and Leisure industry you will develop the skills required to 

follow a career in sports and leisure activities. These will include leading physical activities, 

operating services in a leisure centre or organisation, the development of sport in schools 

and the community, the management of sport and leisure services. Career prospects are to be 

found in a range of environments such as leisure centres, gyms, sports clubs and swimming 

pools. You could be working anywhere where sport and active leisure is organised and

Intermediate Level 2 and Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 Supporting Teaching & Learning 


The Supporting Teaching & Learning qualification provides you with a secure understanding 

of the knowledge and skills needed when working directly with children and young people 

in school environments. The Level 2 and Level 3 qualifications are divided into specific units. 

These cover subjects including child and young person development, safe-guarding their 

welfare, the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion. 

There are no formal entry requirements but you will need to be a at least 16 years of age. You 

will also need to be working or volunteering in a school environment for at least 16 hours 

a week as you need to show competence in both knowledge and skills. Your competence 

and skills will be assessed by a qualified assessor in the work-place and your knowledge 

and understanding will be assessed using a range of assignments and practical activities. 

For those wishing to do the Advanced Apprenticeship you should have at least 12 months 

experience in an appropriate school setting and have already completed an appropriate NVQ 

Level 2 teaching assistant qualification or equivalent. 

At the end of the Apprenticeship you will be qualified in Supporting Teaching and Learning in 

Schools and have gained the following qualifications: 

» Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Teaching & Learning in Schools allowing successful 

candidates to work in roles that support pupils’ learning including teaching assistants, 

learning support assistants and special needs assistants 

» Level 3 Diploma in Specialist Support for Teaching and Learning in Schools allowing 

successful candidates who are experienced teaching assistants, learning support 

assistants, cover supervisors, parent support advisers to further develop their careers

The course will give you the knowledge required to work as a Teaching Assistant and offers

Calderdale College Dance students put on 

a spectacular end of year dance show ‘In 

Motion’ at the Victoria Theatre on Tuesday 21 

June 2011. Showcasing the talented dancers 

and choreographers from the College, the 

show celebrates a wide variety of styles from 

Musical Theatre and Ballet through to Urban 

and Contemporary. Twenty-nine students from 

the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Performing 

Arts (Dance) performed in two shows.

BarBer of the Year coMpetItIon 

Two North Halifax Skills Centre students, 

Martyn McBride and Darren Collins, reached 

the final of the National Student Barber of the 

Year Competition. 

Martyn and Darren entered the British 

Barbers’ Association competition by carrying 

out a cut and finish on a model, the photo 

evidence was sent to the association where 

they were chosen to be included in a select 

group of only 20 finalists invited to attend the 

London final. 

Martyn and Darren attended the drinks 

reception and ceremony held in London on 

the 28th June 2011 where they received their 

certificates as finalists and prizes. They had a 

great experience and this has inspired them 

in completing their NVQ Barbering Level 2.

ACADEMY

The Ark is a Private Day Nursery, Out of School and 

Holiday Club. Established in 2000 is a provider of the 

highest quality childcare in the Calder Valley for children 

aged from 0 to 14 years. 

Jo Brock and Heidi Bingham set up The Ark to primarily 

provide childcare to their own standards for their children. 

As part of this vision they were determined to create an 

environment that was a fantastic place to work and where 

employees felt motivated and enthusiastic. 

A key part of motivating Ark employees has been the 

promotion of training and development to all staff 

members. 

In 2007, The Ark Childcare Academy was developed 

in conjunction with Calderdale College, to allow an 

alternative venue for childcare professionals – available 

to those people working at The Ark and also within other 

childcare settings. 

The Ark is situated in Mytholmroyd providing a choice 

of location within Calderdale for childcare students 

of all ages. There is a dedicated training room with IT 

suite based in newly built premises set in the beautiful 

countryside.

you how to make web pages and web sites. The use of text, colour, pictures, links and many 

other features are covered in detail. Developing Computer Games: This unit will give you

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma IT – Systems Support 


On this two year course you will develop a vast range of in-depth skills in computing that 

will give you the opportunity to gain a university place or a job in the It fi eld, in particular the 

course will train you for a position in IT consultancy. In the fi rst year you will explore the IT 

Industry, fi nding out about what jobs are available and what skills you will need to get these 

positions. 

On the course you will also discover how your computer works both in terms of the hardware 

that makes the computer run and the software that controls it and allows you to reach your 

goals in IT. You will use this to develop digital graphics and your own website, design your 

own computer interfaces and use robots to investigate control systems and technologies. 

In year 2 you will get to go down 2 separate routes to study programming and software 

development, or focus more on developing your skills in computer technical support and 

Human Computer Interactions. You will also learn how to connect PCs into small networks 

through to communication with the rest of the world. At the end of the second year you will 

complete a major project to demonstrate your skills, which will culminate in a showcase event 

with members of the industry visiting. Previous successful projects include; creating a mobile 

network of computer to run computer games competitions and creating a smart card for NHS 

patients to allow for automatic appointments and record retrieval. 

Moving on 

There are several routes to go on upon completion of the course, the most popular being 

university, passing the course will prepare you for an academic degree in the It fi eld, with the 

course being the equivalent of three A-Levels (up to 420 UCAS points, prestigious universities 

requiring 360 points). 

Alternatively completion of the course would give you a fi rm place on the Higher National 

Diploma in Computing at Calderdale College. 

The BTEC Extended Diploma is the national standard for level 3 IT qualifi cations, alongside 

suitable experience in the IT fi eld a graduate can gain a job in IT consultancy and technical 

work. 

The course makes a strong focus on identifying potential routes that will ensure that the 

student goes forward into the best possible route for them.

BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma IT – Computer Games Development 


The computer games industry continues to get bigger; it has become a £2 billion market. 

Some computer games being as big as Hollywood movies, sales of Call of Duty: Black Ops 

reached £648 million in the fi rst six weeks of its release. 

The course makes a heavy emphasis on the skills required to go into the games design and 

development fi eld. The fi rst year will give a heavy focus to developing skills in event driven 

and procedural programming alongside software development. 

In the second year the skills built up in the fi rst year will be utilised in Games Design and 

Development, and will culminate in a major project where the students will utilise their skills 

to develop a full game with a showcase event with members of the industry visiting to see 

the products (and their potential future employees!). Skills will be developed outside of the 

games fi eld in subjects including graphics design, website development, computer systems 

and control technologies to give you a well-rounded, yet focused, 2 year IT course. 

Moving on 

The most popular route upon completion of this course is university, with several local 

universities housing games development companies to help students continue their 

development in the fi eld. Students are able to go into other fi elds of IT with the strong fi eld 

they have studied with the college. 

A sound knowledge of programming languages means that a career as an IT engineer is 

possible. With further part time studies (including the HND computing at Calderdale College).

I came to Calderdale College as I had heard good things from people who had been here before. 

The College is welcoming and everyone goes out of their way to make sure you are ok and they are 

happy to help. Every time I needed help there was a tutor to help or point me in the direction of 

someone who could. The best bit has been meeting new people and getting to work in the different 

departments. I became a student champion and got to attend lots of College events, meet people 

and get them interested in the College. I would defi nitely recommend the course as it is a good 

thing to help you get into the IT industry which has good job prospects. The best part of my course 

was the games development unit which was fun as we had to think of a game and develop it. Two 

of us worked together my friend on the programming and I worked on the design of the game. I am 

aiming to get a job in the IT industry preferably the gaming industry.

will always be a need for new buildings whether they are 

homes, offices or community projects. For every development 

undertaken each one requires trades people to build, insulate, 

plumb, heat, wire and decorate. In relation to industry this 

means employers are increasingly seeking out skilled crafts 

people to ensure quality and the ability to work to deadlines. 

However the desire to improve living and working environments 

is also a growing area as demonstrated by the surge of home 

improvement centres. Whether you wish to learn new skills 

or develop existing capabilities as a career or a hobby these 

courses are taught by experienced professionals from each 

sector of the industry. 

Development of new technology, including the media, has had 

an impact on learning as the industry responds to demand for 

improved efficiency and presentation. Such expectations have 

been encouraged by make over television shows and glossy 

magazines which discourage basic décor and utilities in favour 

of specialist techniques, under floor heating and the return

I have enjoyed everything at NHSC, the tutors are nice and I’ve made loads of mates. 

I have acquired lots of new skills in Bricklaying and really enjoyed it. 

I trained for my level 1 and liked it so much I moved to NHSC to complete level 2. 

like building something out of nothing and everything you need for the course is at 

NHSC. I would recommend the College, it’s very friendly. 

The tutors are always there is you have a question, the tutors sit and explain when 

things go wrong until you can get it right. Do a full year before you decide what to do 

next, stick to the course and give it a chance. I have been involved in enrichment, given 

a talk to Park Lane School, with another student, explaining what the course is all 

about and worked on some bricklaying projects for local organisations. The centre has 

helped me do bricklaying charity work to get used to working. What Next? I’m staying 

on at NHSC and studying for my level 3 bricklaying.

Guild of BriCklayers annual BriCkwork ComPetition Comes to 

Calderdale ColleGe 

In May 2011 Calderdale College’s North Halifax Construction Skills Academy hosted the 

Yorkshire Section of the prestigious Guild of Bricklayers Annual Brickwork Competition. 

Entrants in the competition travelled from colleges and schools around Yorkshire and 

spent the day competing before the presentation of awards took place later in the 

afternoon. 

Various activities ran alongside the competition, including a master bricklaying 

demonstration by former Calderdale College learner and Guild contestant Nigel Aldridge, 

presentations by representatives from Staybills and No More Props, plaster moulding 

tasters and haircuts and pampering by the hair and beauty learners of The Full Works 

salon. The Guild of Bricklayers was founded in 1932 with the aims of promoting and 

maintaining the highest standards of craftsmanship in brickwork. 

The Guild is a national organisation divided into geographical regions where local 

competitions, visits, lectures and other activities take place. All competitors worked hard 

to produce work of a high standard and North Halifax Construction Skills Academy learner 

Brett Michael was awarded the New Entrant, Level 1 prize.

TALENTS AT DEAN CLOUGH GALLERY 

An exhibition of work by three Calderdale 

College Visual Arts students, displayed 

at Dean Clough Art Gallery, attracted a 

wide ranging audience. Christine Herbert, 

Christine Chapman and Audrey Waller 

displayed their talents in their exciting end of 

year show ‘Trio’ at Dean Clough. 

Christine Herbert displayed a large piece 

of work which references the relationship 

between capitalism, the destruction of the 

oceans and the impact it has on us all, both 

now and in the future. Christine Chapman’s 

paintings express primitive feelings, drawing 

on memories and other’s descriptions of 

family family members: “I “I allow my imagination 

and memory to direct my hands as I relive a 

memory on canvas” canvas” she said. Infl uenced by 

Da Vinci and and Gaughin, Christine likes to use 

lots of layers layers and warm colours. 

For her personal project, project, Audrey Waller 

collaborated with a composer composer to produce 

a musical response to her painting. “The 

primary springboard for my painting remains

CALDERDALE COLLEGE WINS AN 

ENTERPRISE CASE STUDY AWARD 

Calderdale College is one of only three 

colleges in the Yorkshire and Humber region 

to win an Enterprising FE (Efe) Outstanding 

Enterprise Case Study award. 

Students organised a large variety of events 

such as Dragon’s Den style meetings, a 

Make Your Mark Challenge and a Fashion 

show to promote enterprise across the 

College. Their hard work was recognised in 

receiving the Efe award. 

Judy Edwards, Donna Wood, Furkan Uddin 

and Ali Shah from the Business Studies 

department attended the awards ceremony 

at Pontefract Racecourse to collect the 

award. “It’s nice to see success and 

development across the College and all the 

different activities the students do. It has 

encouraged a large amount of potential 

and given enjoyment and fun.” Said Furkan 

Uddin, Course Leader in Business and 

Enterprise. He added “Enterprise has grown 

from business studies to across the college. 

It shows the college listens to the students 

and designs courses for them. The college 

has developed entrepreneurship in line with 

government initiatives.” 

ADULT LITERACY 

A group of Calderdale College learners 

studying for the City and Guilds Certifi cate 

in Adult Literacy at Calderdale College are 

celebrating having completed The Reading 

Agency’s Six Book Challenge. 

The Six Book Challenge is a national scheme 

is for less confi dent adult readers and invites 

them to read six books, recording their 

reading in a diary. 

Geraldine Jones of the Central Library, 

Halifax, hosted a reader group meeting and 

presented successful learners with their 

certifi cates. The completion of the Challenge 

is a fantastic achievement for the students 

who joined the Adult Literacy course to 

improve their confi dence and skills in reading, 

writing, speaking and listening. In addition to 

the certifi cates the learners were presented 

with book tokens at the presentation event at 

King Cross Library. 

Adults across the UK take part in the 

Challenge through libraries, colleges, adult 

and community education, prisons and 

workplaces. Since the Challenge began in 

2008 nearly 30,000 adults across the UK have 

registered with the scheme.

facility for 16–24 year olds set up in partnership with 

Mark Riley Hairdressing. It is for learners who aspire 

to be leaders in their industry and who have a natural 

and exceptional flair for hairdressing. 

“Our partnership with Calderdale College came 

about through our wish to improve the quality of 

training for our staff. Together we have developed 

a programme of education linked into the 

commercial sector. 

The benefits of working with the College have 

been that we have access to fantastic training 

facilities and IT support, which helps with training. 

All our trainees train in-house and can realistically 

achieve an NVQ Level 2 in one year, developing 

skills to our quality and standards. We now have a 

ready supply of highly trained people who can hit 

the shop floor running. 

This has been a fantastic opportunity for us to 

realise our vision of 10 shops in 10 years with a 

training academy and a salon. I now know that it 

is possible to go into a town where you are hardly 

known and within 6 months have 120 clients per 

week coming through your salon.”

Jade Chapman studied for her NVQ Level 2 in 

Beauty Therapy at Calderdale College. She 

had always wanted to work in the beauty 

industry and particularly enjoyed the makeup 

section of her NVQ. Jade found the course 

really fun but it also provided her with the 

qualifi cations she needed to start working 

within the industry. Jade is currently working 

for Benefi t Cosmetics and says that the 

course not only gave her the knowledge to 

start her career but also the confi dence to 

work on a beauty counter. 

Jade has been working for Benefi t based 

in Harvey’s of Halifax for a year gaining 

valuable experience of working within a 

busy, customer focussed area of the beauty 

industry. Her advice to those considering 

the NVQ Level 2 in Beauty Therapy at 

Calderdale College is to be dedicated and 

go for it! She adds the NVQ will be a step in

fi lm, TV and design and currently there are 

over 150,000 creative businesses in the UK.

performing arts students Amber Gilmore

Sound and Music for New Media 

I decided on Calderdale College and my chosen 

course as it has all the facilities needed and I am 

able to fi t my course around my business. I would 

recommend the course to anyone who is selfmotivated 

and wanting to expand their knowledge 

of ways of working with new sound recording and 

production techniques. The course is full time but 

lessons only take place two days a week so being 

self-motivated, researching and working in your own 

time is very important. 

The college computers have more software on them 

than I’ll ever get round to using and the recording 

studio has everything needed to make a professional 

recording. All that is needed is the knowledge to make 

the most of it. I have worked on several projects with 

various groups from the drama department, providing 

music of both my own and sourced from other places. 

For me the college community of the music and 

drama departments has been very encouraging and 

rewarding, but it is necessary to be proactive and to 

seek out working relationships, which is providing 

me with invaluable experience of working in the 

sector which I will be able to put into practice after 

my course has been completed My tutors have always 

provided me with any help and advice when needed. 

We also have open sessions in which I have been able 

to have one on one time with the course leader to go 

through particular software or production processes 

that interest me, this is particularly useful as you can 

tailor your knowledge of audio production into ways 

you wish to work and the area of sound for media you 

wish to follow a career in. Initially I was interested 

in following a career in teaching which is something I 

still intend to do, but now through my work with the 

drama department I also plan on working within the 

theatre, fi lm, TV and radio sectors.

enjoyed adapting and working with a variety of students and new experiences. The tutors really

The College is friendly and once you know everyone it’s like a family. The best 

part of my course was the sports coaching and instructing and learning more 

about nutrition. My highlight is being part of the Students Union, I have become 

the SU President, and being allowed to visit Poland and Ireland. My chosen career 

is sports coaching and fi tness in American Football and I would recommend the 

course to those interested in sports careers. I’ve enjoyed myself so much it’s 

becoming a real pride to be here. Not sure what next! I will fi nish my 2nd year and

BTEC Level 1 Certifi cate in Public Services 


The BTEC Level 1 Certifi cate in Public Services is a practical work-based course. This course 

is delivered after you have completed the BTEC Certifi cate in Sport and Active Leisure. 

Altogether learners will study for one year. Learning occurs through the completion of work 

related assignments with a range of assessments to suit every learner. The Level 1 Certifi cate 

is the equivalent of two GCSEs at Grades D–G. You will also have an opportunity to develop 

essential Functional Skills. 

Moving on 

The Level 1 Certifi cate in Public Services is valued by employers and can be used to progress 

in further education. On successful completion of the Level 1 Certifi cate, learners can progress

This is a one year course designed to prepare you for a career in the public services. It will

A&R Training Services have been delivering 

quality training throughout West Yorkshire over 

the past twenty years. 

We specialise in Childcare, Health and Social 

Care, Retail/Customer Service. We have highly 

trained specialist tutors and assessors in each 

vocational area to support learners throughout 

their programme. 

The Excel Foundation Learning programme is 

designed to equip young people with the skills 

needed to start their career. The main aim is to 

help learners progress into an Apprenticeship, 

further learning or employment. 

Learners must be aged 16-18years and 

unemployed. It is a rolling programme and all 

learners are able to apply for EMA. All learners 

will receive a weekly bus pass. 

Learners will be supported with the 

development of personal/social skills, 

vocational skills, including work placements 

and Functional Skills in order to prepare for 

progression onto a Level 2 qualification 

and/or employment. 

KEy training 

Kirklees Youth Training (Key) was founded 

in 1979 for the personal development 

and vocational training of young people. 

It is a not-for-profit limited company and 

registered charity. 

Key Training offers a programme which 

includes Personal Development, Functional 

Skills and Vocational Qualifications in 

Motor Vehicle, Motor Vehicle Body-Shop, 

Engineering and Welding. 

We have well equipped simulated work 

environment with appropriate on-and offthe-job 

training, learning, smart screen and

ACTIV8... 

Is an action packed Pre-Foundation Learning 

course for 16-19 year olds which aims to boost 

self-confidence through experience whilst 

also gaining practical life skills. It gives 

young people the opportunity to look at all 

their options within a well-structured support 

network, where the emphasis is on enhancing 

self-esteem, leading to sustained progression 

within Foundation Learning. 

Project Challenge 

Is a 26 week Foundation Learning 

Programme, where trainees take part in a 

variety of outdoor, educational and training 

activities which stretch them both mentally 

and physically. 

This includes 3 residentials lasting 3, 4 and 

5 days in The Lakes, The Dales and Wales 

which leads to an expedition to a remote part 

of Europe lasting up to 3 weeks. A place on 

this expedition has to be earned and is the 

ultimate test of confidence and teamwork 

where each team member is reliant on each 

other and must have the confidence in their 

own and each others ability. There also 

needs to be a feeling of looking out for each 

other and a need to succeed. 

Through the use of activities such as 

hill walking, skiing, fitness, first aid, 

safety procedures and the achievement 

of nationally recognised qualifications, 

self-confidence and a positive self-image is 

developed and nurtured. The qualifications 

on offer include BTEC Level 1 in Sport & 

Active Leisure, Workskills, Functional Skills 

and Public Services. 

The results of the experience are young 

people with real qualifications, real 

confidence and real determination to make a 

better life for themselves in the world of work 

and education. 

The Project Challenge experience is not only a 

physical journey but a personal one too. 

The main expeditions are deliberately 

challenging and to date, have taken team 

members to some of the most remote parts 

of Europe. 

In an unfamiliar, potentially hostile 

environment, young people have the 

opportunity to use their new skills and to 

genuinely put themselves to the test.

Liam Madden: the first in the UK to be awarded 

the Master Bricklaying Certificate. 

STAFF SUCCESSES! 

UK FIRST FOR CALDERDALE COLLEGE 

Calderdale College Tutor Liam Madden is 

the first in the UK to be awarded the Master 

Bricklaying Certificate. 

Liam Madden, who tutors bricklaying at the 

North Halifax Skills Centre, is the first in the 

UK to be awarded the Master Bricklaying 

Certificate. Liam has achieved this by 

producing a portfolio of work followed by an 

intense interview with the Guild of Bricklayers 

in Nottingham. 

The Master Bricklaying Certificate is a 

new qualification designed specifically for 

learners studying level 3 bricklaying and 

recognises the service given by bricklayers to 

the building trade. 

CALDERDALE COLLEGE LAUnChES 

ThE FIRST OF ITS KInD AppREnTICE 

SChEmE wITh ThE hALIFAx 

Calderdale College and the Halifax have 

embarked on a 12-month apprenticeship 

partnership which is the first of its kind in any 

retail bank in the UK. The new apprentices are 

all aged between 16 and 19 years old and are 

the youngest people to ever join the team at 

Halifax. Six young and eager customer adviser 

apprentices are undertaking a programme of 

practical, on-the-job learning combined with 

in-class theory at Calderdale College. This 

arrangement enables the apprentices to earn 

while they learn, provides them with a great 

incentive to progress and succeed and will 

allow them to immediately practise what they 

are learning in the classroom. 

While in the branch, the apprentices 

gain important work skills and hands-on 

experience. Calderdale College then enables 

them to back up their newly acquired 

knowledge by studying towards a City & Guilds 

Level 2 National Vocational Qualification in 

Retail Financial Services and an EDEXCEL BTEC 

Certificate in Customer Service. 

wORLD BEATER 

And Level 2 sports studies student at 

Calderdale College Hannah Cockroft romped to 

glory at the 2011 Paralympics in New Zealand, 

winning gold in both the T34 100m and the 

T34 200m events. To mark her outstanding 

achievement at the games Hannah was proud 

to receive the College’s Inspire award at 

this year’s graduation ceremony. During her 

time at the College so far Hannah achieved 

astounding things in the field of sport, 

including: Winning the 100m and the 400m 

gold in the Aviva Parallel Success Challenge in 

2009, as well as achieving great results in the 

BWRA (British Wheelchair Racing Association) 

Championships with 100m silver, 400m and 

800m gold. We are all positive that in the time 

Hannah has remaining as a Calderdale learner 

she will continue to excel on the world stage. 

CALDERDALE COLLEGE BECOmES

hALIFAx RLFC 

Calderdale College became the education 

partners of Halifax RLFC in 2011. The unique 

and original nature of the deal will bring 

significant benefits to both parties. 

The arrangement will enable the Club to have a 

training base in Calderdale for the first time in 

a number of years, as they will make use of the 

new sports facilities at the College’s Francis 

Street site. Club members will have access to: 

pre, during and post season fitness testing, 

including cardiovascular and respiratory 

testing, flexibility, strength and endurance 

testing; lifestyle analysis and nutritional 

and wellbeing advice. All such testing and 

advice will be administered by College Sports 

students. 

Students in the College’s Rugby League 

Academy will benefit from access to master 

coaching sessions, as well as having the 

opportunity to progress to the Halifax Under 

23 team. Work experience opportunities for 

College students will also be available.

What is further education? 

Further education is the study you continue 

after you have left school at 16. The 

qualifications you pursue can be at any level 

and are largely designed as an alternative 

to a traditional academic A Level route 

to university or employment. Taught by 

professionals with up to date experience in 

specific fields, the subject matter can range 

from construction skills to hairdressing, 

beauty, holistic therapies, design, acting, 

dancing, sport, science, health, childcare, 

law, business, computing and so on. 

Will it cost me anything to 

study? 

If you’re between 16 and 18, and from an EU 

country (including the UK), your fees are paid. 

If you are 19 or over, and from the UK, you are 

exempt from paying fees if you are in receipt 

of JSA or ESA or you will use your qualification 

to gain employment, the College is offering a 

75% discount on tuition fees for learners on a 

means tested benefit for Academic year

can differ greatly and we work hard to help

What are tutorials? 

The purpose of the tutorial system is to make 

sure you get the most out of your time at 

College and to support your learning. 

Your development is regularly reviewed. You 

also have group tutorials to cover personal 

development, careers education and action 

planning. You will regularly review your own 

progress through self-review and with your 

personal tutor, allowing you to set objectives 

to help you to achieve your goals. Your 

personal tutorials will also help you develop 

your CV, consider career or university options 

and develop your ability to assess your own 

performance. 

Will i get homeWork? 

We expect you to take more responsibility for 

your own learning than you may have been 

used to and to spend time while at College 

working on assignments on your own or in 

small groups. Although depending on what 

you are studying, not all self-guided learning 

will be of an academic nature. You may need

Arts learners may want to rehearse outside of 

normal course hours. The more work you do 

at College, the less you’ll need to do at home! 

hoW often Will i need to come 

to college? 

It really depends on your course—but 

most full time students will be in College 

a maximum of four days per week. The 

timetables allow time for personal study 

and also for part time jobs, which we know 

are important. It’s also important that you 

attend College regularly and your tutors will 

monitor attendance to help keep you on track 

with your studies. In some areas, especially 

academies, attendance determines your 

access to additional enrichment programmes. 

can i Work part time as Well as 

study full time at college? 

Yes, we appreciate that learners sometimes 

need to support themselves financially with 

part time jobs. We would recommend working 

no more than 10 hours per week alongside 

full time study. Learners who find themselves 

in financial difficulties can get confidential 

advice on financial assistance from Student 

Services. 

What do your students do When 

they have finished their course? 

Many learners go on to university or further 

study here at Calderdale College, or into 

successful careers in their chosen field. In 

some subject areas you can study right up to 

degree level at Calderdale College, degrees 

are awarded by partner universities, Bradford 

University, Huddersfield University and Leeds 

Metropolitan University. 

Why do you have security? 

Unlike when you’re at school, outside of 

class College learners can come and go as 

they please and therefore we ask that you 

show your learner ID card on entering the 

building so that we can identify those people 

who are not learners of the College and ask 

them to sign in as visitors. This also allows 

us to adhere to health and safety policies. 

The College has many CCTV cameras in and 

around the buildings on the main site and at 

other locations—you can feel secure in the 

knowledge that these are monitored 24/7. 

What if i don’t get the grades? 

We have courses at all levels so we should be 

able to help you find a suitable course. If we 

make you an offer and you don’t achieve the 

grades you need, you will be able to discuss 

your options at your enrolment session or 

you can come to our Results Day Service. Our 

services are open to anyone on GCSE and A 

Levels results days for advice and guidance.

DECIDING ON THE RIGHT CAREER PATH 

There are several choices open to young 

people today to allow them to get on the 

right career path. Further education colleges 

like Calderdale College provide courses to 

young people, which fulfi l many functions. 

They can be to provide a progression route to 

university, provide training to allow entry into 

employment, or provide work-based learning 

options. 

The programme of study or route a young 

person takes could be infl uenced by how 

they prefer to learn. Obviously, we are most 

successful when we really enjoy what we are 

learning. We all need to believe in ourselves 

and feel confi dent to be motivated to learn. 

We all need the support of our families, 

friends and mentors (such as school teachers 

and careers advisers) to make the right choice 

and succeed at what we choose to study or 

work at. We all have different styles that suit 

us best, whether it is work-based learning 

or practical, vocational courses. Some 

courses are assessed through exams, which 

allow some people to perform and some are 

assessed through coursework, which allows 

others to shine. Some practical assessments 

allow learners to demonstrate skills learnt in 

a realistic working environment, some involve 

collecting portfolios of evidence to assess 

occupational standards demonstrated and 

met by learners. 

The College has invested heavily to provide 

the most up-to-date and industry relevant 

facilities to provide young people with the 

right skills. 

Work-based learning is transforming the 

job market – Apprenticeships mean that 

employers can infl uence the skills young 

people develop and bring with them into the 

job market. Calderdale College is well-placed 

to respond to employers needs, being a 

work-based learning provider and a further 

education college, we have an insight into 

what employers want and can teach young 

people up-to-date and valuable skills to give 

them the edge in an increasingly global and 

competitive job market. 

Study on a vocational course at College or 

as an Apprentice develops your life skills, 

developing social awareness, confi dence, 

team working and entrepreneurial skills as

Learners are supported during their time at

PRESTIGIOUS EQUALITY AND 

DIVERSITY AWARD 

Calderdale College students celebrated the 

College’s achievement of the prestigious 

Investors in Diversity Award at their annual 

One Festival event. 

The College was awarded the highly prized 

quality mark following a two-and-a-half day 

assessment in November, making it the fi rst 

organisation in Calderdale to receive the 

accolade. The Award recognises the College’s 

commitment to embedding equality and 

diversity into everything it does and is a great 

achievement for staff who have worked hard 

over the last couple of years to develop and 

implement their strategic plans. 

In the assessment report, the National Centre 

for Diversity assessor stated, “Throughout 

my two-and-a-half-days on site I found that 

staff and learners were very welcoming and 

when I walked around the building I observed 

a very good atmosphere throughout. There 

is a very open and inclusive culture within 

the College and staff said they were proud to 

work for the College.” 

Members of the College’s Student Executive 

Committee received the Investors in 

Diversity plaque on behalf of the students 

of the College as part of the One Festival 

Celebrations. The annual Festival is a 

celebration of equality and diversity which 

offers a lively mix of information and 

entertainment and is attended by numerous 

external organisations such as Lifeline, 

Café Wednesday, Pride, Yorkshire Mixtures, 

Calderdale Interfaith Council, the NHS and 

local Police. 

Student Union Vice President Emma Wright 

said “There are students from lots of different 

backgrounds studying together here. The One 

Festival is a really good event for getting all 

the students together to have a bit of fun and 

do things like try different foods and watch 

dancing from other cultures. It’s a chance 

for people to get to know and understand

Centre 

The Women’s Netball Development Centre 

was launched in 2010 and is an exciting 

opportunity for any women wishing to 

participate in a competitive league and several 

cups, or friendly games, while studying at 

Calderdale College. The fantastic new indoor 

netball court and facilities will play a pivotal 

role in developing the squad, enabling new 

and existing players to enhance their skills 

and abilities.

Launched in 2006 as a partnership between 

Calderdale College and Halifax RLFC, the 

Rugby League Academy provides talented 

young sports people with the chance to 

combine rugby league with academic studies. 

Development Centre athletes will study for 

nationally recognised qualifications whilst 

benefiting from expert coaching from an ex 

professional player and fully qualified coach. 

They also have the opportunity to be selected 

for Halifax RLFC’s under 18 and reserve teams. 

Coaching is lead by Lee Greenwood who is 

the Assistant Coach beside Karl Harrison at 

Halifax RLFC, so there are great opportunities 

to progress to the professional game.

support to the Calderdale College Rugby 

League Development Centre. We want to 

develop local talent from Calderdale and the 

surrounding region where Rugby League is 

very much a part of many people’s lives. We

Calderdale College launChes the 

first of its kind apprentiCe sCheme 

with the halifax 

Calderdale College and the Halifax have 

embarked on a 12-month apprenticeship 

partnership which is the first of its kind in any 

retail bank in the UK. The new apprentices are 

all aged between 16 and 19 years old and are 

the youngest people to ever join the team at 

Halifax. Six young and eager customer adviser 

apprentices are undertaking a programme of 

practical, on-the-job learning combined with 

in-class theory at Calderdale College. This 

arrangement enables the apprentices to earn 

while they learn, provides them with a great 

incentive to progress and succeed and will 

allow them to immediately practise what they 

are learning in the classroom. While in the 

branch, the apprentices gain important work 

skills and hands-on experience. Calderdale 

College then enables them to back up their 

newly acquired knowledge by studying 

towards a City & Guilds Level 2 National 

Vocational Qualification in Retail Financial 

Services and an EDEXCEL BTEC Certificate in 

Customer Service.

A group of Calderdale College students 

volunteer as one-to-one reading mentors in 

Halifax schools following their training with 

Reading Matters, the one-to-one literacy 

charity. As Reading Leaders, the students 

are trained to use a range of techniques and 

resources to improve reading skills, motivation 

and confidence. They are all volunteers with 

the College’s V project.The mentoring scheme 

was launched at the College by Monika 

Wasilewska, Senior Capability Manager in 

the Cabinet Office, who was work-shadowing 

Catherine McGrath, CEO of Reading Matters. 

“I’m very impressed that these students are 

taking on increased responsibility in addition 

to their course studies”, said Monika. “I’m sure 

they will find it a rewarding experience that will 

have a positive impact on the attainment of 

their reading partners in school”.

and catch up with old friends for Life Skills 

Learners at their certificate presentation 

event at Calderdale College. Former students 

returned to join those still studying at the 

College as they picked up awards for Life 

Skills and Employability courses completed 

earlier this year. Certificates were awarded 

to Entry Level 1, 2 and 3 learners who had 

achieved qualifications in Personal Progress, 

Personal and Social Development and 

Employability.The learners undertook a variety 

of activities to achieve their certificates, 

from running the D Café, a Book Club and 

Trolley Shop to taking part in healthy lifestyle 

activities and local environmental projects.

hannah honeYwill seleCted for 

prestigious threadneedle priZe 

exhibition 

Hannah Honeywill has been chosen for the 

final exhibition of the Threadneedle Prize, 

the UK’s most prominent competition for 

representational art and sculpture. Her piece, 

‘Unfunction/Function’, a reshaped chair which 

questions how people experience the form 

and function of everyday objects, was selected 

from 4,300 entries. Hannah is now one of just 

45 artists in line for the £25,000 prize and 

her work will be exhibited at London’s Mall 

Galleries. The Threadneedle Prize is one of 

the largest prizes for a single work of art in 

the UK and will be awarded at the close of the 

exhibition by a prestigious panel of judges 

including Godfrey Worsdale, director of BALTIC 

Centre for Contemporary Art, Julie Lomax, 

head of visual arts for the Arts Council and 

Lisa Milroy, head of graduate painting at The 

Slade School of Fine Art. Hannah teaches 

art at Calderdale College to mature students 

hoping to access higher education. She 

trained at Camberwell College of Art, London 

and holds a degree in Visual Arts.

HOW TO FIND US 

ON FOOT 

Calderdale College is 10 minutes on foot from Halifax town centre and approximately 15-25 minutes from the bus 

and train stations. It's easy to get to as it's on the main road to Sowerby Bridge and Hebden Bridge. Walking 

to College is a healthy, environmentally friendly and inexpensive way to travel! Many students already walk to 

Calderdale College. There is a pleasant, direct pedestrian route signposted from Halifax town centre to the Francis 

Street Campus. This route avoids busy roads and dual carriage ways, passing the famous green space of People’s 

Park on the way. 

BY BUS 

Metro runs public transport in the region and travel information is provided by their Metroline services. Visit their

From Halifax, Hebden Bridge, Sowerby Bridge, Rochdale and Todmorden 

These services will alight in the layby on King Cross Road:

Halifax is easily accessible in one train journey from the following: 

Manchester – 60 mins 

Bradford – 20 mins 

Leeds – 45 mins/1.05 hrs 

BY CAR 

Directions from M62 East to Francis Street Campus 

Exit Jct. 26 and take the fourth exit A58 Halifax. 

The journey time after leaving the M62 is approximately 20 minutes. Follow the A58 to Halifax, over the dual 

carriageway flyover (Burdock Way) and at the end of the flyover is a very large traffic controlled roundabout, 

continue along the A58 and take the second exit from this. Join dual carriageway for mile where a slip road joins 

from the left. Move into the right hand lane and at the lights bear right on to Parkinson Lane. Turn right at a mini 

roundabout along Francis Street, Calderdale College is on the right. 

Directions from M62 West to Francis Street Campus 

Exit Jct. 24 follow signs A629 Halifax/Huddersfield. 

Join the dual carriageway and follow to the roundabout, take the second exit onto A629 and follow to the centre of 

Halifax. The headquarters of the Halifax Building Society (HBOS) are on the left. The A629 bears left at the lights 

next to the Victoria Theatre, follow to the next set of lights at Bull Green. Keep in the left hand lane, taking first 

exit at the roundabout (keep left), join the dual carriageway and move into the right hand lane, at the next set of 

lights turn right on to Parkinson Lane and at mini roundabout turn right onto Francis Street, Calderdale College is 

on the right.
