Sculpture by the Sea returns to
Cottesloe Beach this March. We
talk to founding director David
Handley to fi nd out more
HOW HAS THE EVENT EVOLVED
SINCE IT STARTED IN 1997?
Sculpture by the Sea began at Bondi
as a one-day event with the aim of
creating a major free-to-the-public
event for the people of Sydney and
its visitors. The exhibition quickly
grew to become the largest annual
sculpture exhibition in the world
featuring over 100 sculptures and
attracting 500,000 visitors. In 2005,
Sculpture by the Sea went across
Australia to Perth where last
year’s exhibition attracted over
200,000 visitors.
WHY CHOOSE THE BEACH
AS THE VENUE?
The beach is quintessentially
Australian and where we like to
play. It’s also a site of natural
beauty which excites and inspires
sculptors. The stunning coastline
and terraced lawn of Cottesloe
Beach provide a wonderful place
for artists to exhibit their work
with varied locations and dramatic
backdrops for the sculptures.

HOW MANY SCULPTURES WILL BE
EXHIBITED THIS YEAR AND WHAT
ARE SOME TO LOOK OUT FOR?
We’ll see works from more than 70
artists. Crowd pleasers will include
Paul Caporn’s (WA) giant yellow
sculptural dump truck on the beach
and Wang Shugang’s (China) red
meditative fi gures.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE
WILL TAKE AWAY FROM
THIS EXHIBITION?
To enjoy the sculptures they like and
not worry about not liking others.
All of us have different tastes and
there’s something that everyone will
fi nd to enjoy at the show.
