068 chocolate romance The nation’s fi rst commercial crops of cocoa are proving a hit with growers, consumers and restaurateurs in tropical Queensland Back in the 1960s it was a radical idea. Now it’s a reality — the idea of cocoa grown in Australia and used to produce our very own fi rst origin chocolate. We all know chocolate is said to be an aphrodisiac, but what could be more romantic than cocoa grown in the foothills of the world-heritage listed Daintree Rainforest — a place where rare fauna and fl ora are constantly being discovered? Just a few small plantations in this unique region are now home to 2m-tall cocoa trees that are producing Australia’s only WORDS ROBYN RANKIN commercial crops. And although Daintree Estates chocolate was only launched in November 2011, the company is already having trouble keeping up with demand. Cocoa was an experimental crop at a research station in the Cairns hinterland in the 1960s and was grown by individual farmers who imported seeds from Papua New Guinea to learn whether it could be viable. Some of those fi rst trees still produce pods. But things got serious in 1997 when Cadbury Schweppes (Australia) approached government agencies in Queensland, the Northern Territory and Western Australia about the feasibility of a cocoa industry in northern Australia. A research project started in 1999, trialling cocoa in three northern Australian growing regions and mechanisation opportunities. Trials in Far North Queensland (FNQ) excelled, with good yields and quality, and no major pest or disease problems. However, that is where the concept ground to a halt — until Daintree Cocoa Pty Ltd (DCPL) came on the scene in mid-2010 with a new business model that didn’t rely on the need to compete on a world commodity cocoa bean price.
