VI. SUMMARY<br />

A study was c<strong>on</strong>ducted <strong>in</strong> the Northern Dry Z<strong>on</strong>e <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Karnataka to know the effect <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

farmers’ <str<strong>on</strong>g>practices</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>soil</strong> <strong>properties</strong> and <strong>soil</strong> health <strong>in</strong> selected major<br />

cropp<strong>in</strong>g systems.<br />

The <strong>soil</strong> samples were collected and analysed for <strong>soil</strong> physical, chemical and<br />

biological <strong>properties</strong> and also for availability <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> plant nutrients. The salient f<strong>in</strong>d<strong>in</strong>gs <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> the<br />

<strong>in</strong>vestigati<strong>on</strong> are summarized <strong>in</strong> this chapter.<br />

Farmyard manure and vermicompost were the sources <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g>s used by <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

farmers <strong>in</strong> the study area. The quantity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g>s applied to <strong>soil</strong>s varied from 8.0 to 20.0<br />

t<strong>on</strong>nes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> FYM per ha per year and 1.0 to 3.0 t<strong>on</strong>nes <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> vermicompost per ha per year.<br />

The nutrient (N, P and K) c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> was higher <strong>in</strong> vermicomposts than <strong>in</strong> FYM. The<br />

C:N ratio <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> vermicomposts was also narrower <strong>in</strong> vermicomposts (13:1 to 20:1) compared<br />

to its ratio <strong>in</strong> FYM (25:1 to 38:1).<br />

The quality <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> nutrients added to <strong>soil</strong> through <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g>s varied widely depend<strong>in</strong>g up<strong>on</strong> the<br />

nutrient c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong> and quantity <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g>s applied by the farmer.<br />

The physical <strong>properties</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>soil</strong>s were found to be <strong>in</strong>fluenced favourably by the <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> practice. A reducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> bulk density and an <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> water hold<strong>in</strong>g capacity<br />

and water stable aggregates was noticed <strong>in</strong> all the <strong>soil</strong>s under <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

A reducti<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> pH was observed <strong>in</strong> <strong>soil</strong>s under <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g>. But, however there was<br />

no appreciable change <strong>in</strong> the EC <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>soil</strong>s.<br />

A wide variati<strong>on</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g> carb<strong>on</strong> c<strong>on</strong>tent (19.42% to 102.94%) <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>soil</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g> farms over c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al farms was observed. The <strong>soil</strong>s under <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g> farms also<br />

recorded higher CEC values than those under c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al farms and the <strong>in</strong>crease was<br />

between 5.40 to 16.60 per cent.<br />

The <strong>soil</strong>s under <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> recorded higher amounts <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> available N, P, K and S than<br />

the <strong>soil</strong>s under c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

The average <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> available nitrogen and phosphorus <strong>in</strong> <strong>soil</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g> farms over<br />

c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al farms ranged from 7.27 per cent and 6.85 per cent to 15.20 per cent and<br />

23.80 per cent, respectively.<br />

The available potassium c<strong>on</strong>tent <strong>in</strong>creased marg<strong>in</strong>ally (2 – 5%) <strong>in</strong> the <strong>soil</strong>s under <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

The available sulphur <strong>in</strong> <strong>soil</strong>s, <strong>on</strong> an average, <strong>in</strong>creased from 3.60 per cent (kharif jowar<br />

based cropp<strong>in</strong>g system) to 10.40 per cent (cott<strong>on</strong> based cropp<strong>in</strong>g system) due to <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> practice.<br />

All the <strong>soil</strong>s irrespective <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> type <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> and cropp<strong>in</strong>g system c<strong>on</strong>ta<strong>in</strong>ed DTPAextractable<br />

micr<strong>on</strong>utrients above the critical c<strong>on</strong>centrati<strong>on</strong>, with <strong>soil</strong>s under <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> record<strong>in</strong>g comparatively higher amounts than those under c<strong>on</strong>venti<strong>on</strong>al <str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g>.<br />

A substantial <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> available status <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> Zn, Fe, Mn and Cu <strong>in</strong> <strong>soil</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g> farms<br />

was observed.<br />

A marked <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> dehydrogenase activity was observed <strong>in</strong> the <strong>soil</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g> farms<br />

<strong>in</strong> all the cropp<strong>in</strong>g systems.<br />

From the study, it could be c<strong>on</strong>cluded that the <strong>soil</strong> <strong>properties</strong> get favourably<br />

<strong>in</strong>fluenced by <str<strong>on</strong>g>organic</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>farm<strong>in</strong>g</str<strong>on</strong>g> practice which <strong>in</strong> turn would enhance the <strong>soil</strong> health.
