A TASTEFUL
BRATISLAVA
Bratislava really comes to life in those
autumn months for that aquired taste
The summer, with its array of
colourful cultural activities,
is now gradually handing the
baton over to the autumn, and
the pulsating atmosphere of the
summer terraces is slowly moving indoors
to the cafés, restaurants and wine bars to
excite the taste buds of many a gourmet. The
autumn is not just a time when you can witness
a blaze of colours in nature, as it also offers
a ray of sunshine in the shape of a glass of
fi ne wine. Although the fi rst chronicle about
wine in Bratislava dates back 2,600 years,
the tradition of this once wine-making city is
brought to life every year. The Wine Harvest
Celebrations, wine tasting and culinary feasts
are always accompanied by traditional white
and red burcˇiak wine (fermented must). Even
though, in the last century, Bratislava has
transformed into a vibrant metropolis, where
former vineyards are now replaced by housing
schemes and villas, the renovated city centre
is full of cosy cafés and restaurants. Wine
lovers and viticulturists can enjoy a trip to
the Museum of Viticulture in Apponyi House
in the city centre or to the many wine bars
offering a wide choice of wines from the Little
Carpathian region. In Bratislava you don’t just
see the autumn around you, you can smell it
as well. The breeze carries the inviting aromas
of goose and duck – traditional specialties,
accompanied by lokše potato crepes and
stewed cabbage. Don’t forget to make a
reservation in advance, though, because
these delicious dishes are extremely popular,
attracting people from far and wide. Traditional
“home” restaurants are particularly typical in
the villages of Slovenský Grob and Chorvátsky
Grob just 15km from Bratislava. A visit to
Bratislava in the autumn combined with some
special music event like the Bratislava Jazz
Days and the Bratislava Music Festival should
defi nitely be marked in your diaries as “not to
be missed”. If you can’t make it in the autumn,
don’t fret, the winter in Bratislava also exudes
its own magical charm.
