Hydrangea serrata
Mountain Hydrangea
Family: Hydrangaceae
H. serrata is native to mountainous regions of Asia and Japan, and
is better suited to cold climates than H. macrophylla, which is native
to milder coastal regions. While we have liked H serrata for years
because of its improved bud hardiness, the new Tuff Stuff hydrangea
adds another dimension of coolness to this species: it reblooms. If
your reblooming H. macrophyllas have been inconsistent performers,
try Tuff Stuff. It’s the reblooming hydrangea that really does.
Tiny TuFF sTuFF (H. s. ‘MAKD’, ppaf, cbraf)
This is a real beauty, with flowers so delicate and refined that it seems
strange to call them TUFF STUFF. But they are. Extremely bud-hardy, each year it
produces abundant lacecap flowers comprised of doubled sepals. While this plant
leans to blue, the flower color may range from blue to pink to white – all soft,
delicate shades perfect for refined gardens. The flowers age to an attractive pink,
and tip down in a distinctive arching fashion. Propagation prohibited without a license.
Patent/trademark tag required. USDA Zone 5, 1.5 - 2’ tall and wide, gr 0.5
Item #: 43904 - 4” • 43905 - Quick Turn
TuFF sTuFF (H. s. ‘MAK20’ ppaf, cbraf)
Our hydrangea breeding goal here was to deliver improved bud and stem hardiness
in addition to the ability to flower on new wood. This serrata hybrid delivers on both
accounts. Its attractive, reddish-pink, lacecap flowers create a mass of color in early
summer. It continues to produce new buds and flowers right up until frost. The semidouble
to double florets begin with creamy coloration in the center before maturing
to an intense pink. Propagation is prohibited without a license. Patent/trademark tag
required. USDA Zone 5, AHS 9, 2-3’ tall and wide, gr 0.5
Item#: 43874 - 4” • 43875 - Quick Turn
Hypericum St. John’s-Wort
Family: Hypericaceae (Hyperi-cum: Greek name of obscure meaning)
‘Albury Purple’ (H. androsaemum)
Rich velvety purple leaf tips, yellow flowers and attractive dark red fruit
contribute to its special appeal. Its low mounding habit makes it perfect
for mass plantings. USDA 6, AHS 8, 18-24 in., gr 0.5
Item #: 45002 - 2 1/4” • 45004 - 4”
Blues FesTivAl TM (H. kalmianum ‘SMHKBF’, ppaf, cbraf)
Looking for a better blue? This is it. Attractive blue leaves contrast with the
bright yellow flowers in July and August. The combination of long-blooming
yellow flowers and cool blue-green foliage is very appealing. Tightly
branched, compact growth makes this a good native plant for landscaping,
and gives it great container presentation at retail, too. Propagation
prohibited without a license. Patent/trademark tag required.
USDA 4, AHS 9, 2-3’ tall & wide, gr 1
Item # 45482 - 2 1/4” • 45484 - 4” • 45485 - Quick Turn
GolDen rule TM (H. calycinum ‘NCHC1’, ppaf, cbraf)
This is the solution to many landscape challenges! An excellent groundcovering
subshrub for shade, Golden Rule has colorful orange new growth
and attractive yellow foliage. Unlike ‘Brigadoon’, it does not revert. Yellow
summer flowers up to 2” across add to its appeal. Although it is not as
aggressive as the green-leafed varieties, it will benefit from a trimming
one or two times per year. Propagation prohibited without a license.
Patent/trademark tag required. USDA 5, AHS 7, 12”, gr 1
Item #45112 - 2 1/4” • 45114 - 4” • 45115 - Quick Turn
