H. serrata is native to mountainous regions of Asia and Japan, and<br />
is better suited to cold climates than H. macrophylla, which is native<br />
to milder coastal regions. While we have liked H serrata for years<br />
because of its improved bud hardiness, the new Tuff Stuff hydrangea<br />
adds another dimension of coolness to this species: it reblooms. If<br />
your reblooming H. macrophyllas have been inconsistent performers,<br />
try Tuff Stuff. It’s the reblooming hydrangea that really does.<br />

This is a real beauty, with flowers so delicate and refined that it seems<br />
strange to call them TUFF STUFF. But they are. Extremely bud-hardy, each year it<br />
produces abundant lacecap flowers comprised of doubled sepals. While this plant<br />
leans to blue, the flower color may range from blue to pink to white – all soft,<br />
delicate shades perfect for refined gardens. The flowers age to an attractive pink,<br />
and tip down in a distinctive arching fashion. Propagation prohibited without a license.<br />

Our hydrangea breeding goal here was to deliver improved bud and stem hardiness<br />
in addition to the ability to flower on new wood. This serrata hybrid delivers on both<br />
accounts. Its attractive, reddish-pink, lacecap flowers create a mass of color in early<br />
summer. It continues to produce new buds and flowers right up until frost. The semidouble<br />
to double florets begin with creamy coloration in the center before maturing<br />

aggressive as the green-leafed varieties, it will benefit from a trimming<br />
