Farm. This English boxwood has a fantastic dense columnar form that<br />

contrasts well with any planting arrangement and also creates a fine<br />

This is an improved, fast-growing form of ‘Winter Gem’. Its glossy<br />

evergreen foliage is attractive year-round, and it has excellent<br />

hardiness. This variety’s more upright habit makes it great for hedging.<br />

An excellent production plant, it will finish more quickly than other<br />

evergreen has rich, glossy green foliage with a lime margin that matures<br />

to gold as summer progresses. It holds its color in summer and winter.<br />

Plum Yew<br />

Family: Cephalotaxaceae (Ceph-a-lo-tax-us: Greek compound meaning flowering in heads or clusters)<br />

‘Duke Gardens’<br />

Discovered as a horizontally spreading sport of ‘Fastigiata’ in 1959 at<br />

Sarah P. Duke gardens in Durham, NC. It has dense growth and dark<br />

foliage – a striking and reliable foundation shrub. This is a female form of<br />

plum yew and if a male is planted in the vicinity, ‘Duke Gardens’ will bear<br />

fruit. AWARDS: PHS Gold Medal. USDA 6(5), AHS 10, 2-3 feet, gr 2<br />

‘Fastigiata’<br />

An attractive columnar form that is commonly used in place of Taxus<br />

‘Hicksii’ because it is heat tolerant and deer resistant. The narrow, soft<br />

‘Fritz Huber’<br />

Elegant low, prostrate selection of Japanese plum-yew. Six years in our<br />

test garden, it has proven to be an attractive, hardy evergreen that holds<br />

color through winter. This deer resistant plant, known for its shade tolerance,<br />

has also been reported to be sun tolerant as far south as Houston,<br />

A hardy selection of Oregon cedar that has its beginnings in Lake County,<br />

Ohio. This tough, narrow pyramidal evergreen has attractive foliage with<br />

weeping tips reminiscent of Eastern hemlock. Very shade tolerant and<br />

thus makes a great alternative for hemlock in areas affected by hemlock<br />

A dense, compact evergreen with feathery, juvenile foliage. Branches<br />

‘Confucius’ (C. obtusa)<br />

Yellow hinoki cypress. Bright lemon-yellow foliage with darker foliage<br />

on the interior of the plant. Faster growing than ‘Aurea Nana’ this gem<br />

forms a broadly pyramidal, upright plant.<br />
