The Gruffalo and
The Gruffalo’s Child
From January 14
“Mouse can scare hungry animals away
with tall stories of the terrifying Gruffalo, but
what happens when he comes face to face
with the very creature he imagines?” Based
on the picture book by Julia Donaldson and
Axel Scheffl er, these two family musicals
by Tall Stories UK — which will run at the
Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts,
delivering great fun for parents and kids
aged three and up. The show also comes
to Singapore in February at the DBS Arts
Centre. www.hkticketing.com, www.sistic.
The M1 Singapore Fringe
Festival 2011
January 5–16
This festival just keeps getting better.
Now on its seventh year, organizer
The Necessary Stage is once again
bringing together artists of various
genres from countries such as Japan,
China, Singapore, India and Korea.
The theme? Art and education. Three
works will make their Asian debuts
during the event, while 10 will make
their world premieres. Worth checking
out are Another Me: Transformations
from Pain to Power, a stirring photo
exhibit about survivors of abuse;
School of Hard Knocks, which looks
at old playgrounds; Perceptio, an
audiovisual concert with computergenerated
cinematics that focuses on
environmental issues; and Aromascape
of Singapore, a workshop that aims to
elicit feelings through your powerful
sense of smell. www.sistic.com.sg,
Akon Live in Singapore
January 8
The Senegalese-American producer and
singer-songwriter gives Singapore fans a
special treat, with tracks from his soonto-be
released fourth album, Stadium as
well as his other hits. The show will have
more than a touch of glamor to boot, as
the artist and his crew will be riding sleek
cars by Maserati. But then fans will also
get to see his philanthropic side — part of
the proceeds will go to charity. Singapore
