We wake before dawn and drive to the Bahay Kalipay mountain retreat for a sunrise meditation with Clayton. Next is an introduction to meditation and Ashtanga yoga with Clayton Horton, an experienced teacher from San Francisco who now conducts workshops around the world. Ashtanga is a unique type of Hatha (physical) yoga, which uses breath-synchronized movements to link yoga postures into sequences. This type of yoga produces intense internal heat, detoxifying P URE PALAWAN muscles and organs. Monica, who takes us through the basics of Ashtanga step by step, guides us through our practice. After a raw food preparation class in the evening, we have our fi rst “inner dance” session with Pi. “The dance is a healing process that takes place though accessing our deeper layers and releasing negativity trapped inside,” he { 47 } Top: Mountaintop meditation at dawn with Clayton Horton. Afterwards we talk about our experiences, which varied individually. Some of us felt just a slight energy move through them whereas others were totally overwhelmed by the dynamic sensation. Emotions came pouring out as well as feelings of reassurance. “My inner dance experience has given me the strength to cope with my corporate life,” one participant told the group. The next morning we wake before dawn to drive to the Bahay Kalipay mountain retreat on the west coast of Palawan for sunrise meditation with Clayton. We are all so relaxed on the cool mountaintop, with green fi elds and forest stretching to the sea. “Meditating in a place as peaceful as this is an entirely different experience,” says Clayton.
