COMMENTARY/LETTERS
The Long Weekend Means???
I sometimes have a little
problem with the term “Memorial
Day Holiday” or the “Memorial
Day Holiday Weekend.”
It’s the word “Holiday” that
bothers me. It is Memorial Day
and/or Memorial Weekend.
When I ask people what Memorial
Day is. I find that few
really know. Some know it is a
time to put the flags out for
some type of military day.
Many say it is a day off of work
and school and “It’s a Holiday!”
Since when did we start celebrating
and making it a “Holiday”
when a soldier gives his
life for our country? Should we
believe that an 18 year old
young man, while serving our
country, takes a bullet, artillery
round or steps on a mine, and
gives the ultimate sacrifice, his
life, we should celebrate it as a
holiday?
Let’s thank him for dying, so
now we can have a Memorial
Day Sales all over the place. Automobile
dealerships, major
stores, mom & pop stores can
have Super Sales with Big Savings
during the Memorial Day
Holiday Weekend.
Sadly, some have seemed to
have forgotten what that day,
Memorial Day, is all about. We
shouldn’t have to be reminded
George Ogden
That’s just the way it is!
as it should have been taught in
our schools (or has it?). This
Japanese Community
Center Honors Veterans
By George Ogden
WEST COVINA — The
East San Gabriel Valley Japanese
Community Center honored all
veterans with their 15th Annual
Memorial Service. The was held
at their center in West Covina
on Sunday, May 24. It was well
attended with standing room
only.
The Master of Ceremonies
were Brandon Leong and Jennifer
Akamine who is also the
ESGVJCC Queen.
The posting of the flags was
done by VFW Nisei Post 9902.
Miko Noriega from Scout
Troop 1328.
Vice President David
Teragowa welcomed everyone
who attended the event and
talked about the program.
The guest speaker was Rob-
is a day to remember and to give
thanks and honor to those soldiers
who served you, and are
now gone. These veterans have
given of themselves. Many lost
their lives while serving in the
military.
Today, I see veterans honoring
themselves. If you were to
take a head count at a Memorial
Day service, you would find
that today, most of the people
attending would be veterans and
their families.
I went to a number of Me-
Guest speaker Robert Leong, Special Forces Army Captain in
Vietnam
ert Leong who served in the special
forces in Vietnam as an
Army Captain. His message
was in three parts. He talked a
little about himself, about those
that served and what to do next
(with our veterans). He went on
to say that “to be honorable, you
need to act honorable”
He also recognized a number
of Japanese Americans who
gave their lives during WWII,
the Korean and Vietnam Wars.
Then they had a flag ceremony
with the playing of
TAPS by past VFW District
Commander Bernard Cain.
Pearl Omiya, ESGVJCC Executive
Director then gave a
few words of appreciation.
Refreshments were served
after the ceremony.
morial Day events this past
weekend. For those of you who
had a chance to attend, a special
thanks to you.
Many took off for the three
day weekend. Some of you
were flying flags from you
cars, boats and/or trailers. You
took the memory with you.
Again thanks.
It is up to us to remember
these proud veterans and to
honor them in some way.
Opinions Are The Writer’s
I would like to recommend a
great restaurant, "The Palms"
located at 1717 S. Grand Avenue
in Glendora. It serves
good and delicious food with
very reasonable prices. Mr. Bill,
the original owner has taken
over the restaurant again and he
certainly knows how to run a
business. For example, between
6:00 AM to 12:00 noon, breakfast
costs from $1.99 to $2.99
depending on your choice. At
today's economy it is a real treat!
I invite everyone to visit "The
Palms". It is open from 6:00 AM
till 9:00 PM. It offers macaroni
The American Legion Auxiliary
is long known for support
of our communities and our
veterans. A year and a half ago
I wrote about the American Legion
Auxiliary's involvement in
"Operation Mend", another opportunity
to help our wounded
soldiers returning home with
serious facial injuries by providing
access to the country's best
plastic and reconstructive surgeons
in the private sector. Last
Friday on Channel 4 World
News Tonight there was a segment
on this wonderful program
at UCLA, started with a
man named Ronald Katz, a wellregarded
inventor, who although
not a veteran himself has always
had a deep affection for the
military through the eyes and
talent of his father, a WWII USO
performer, Mickey Katz.
Having provided the lead gift
for the new Fisher House at the
Brooke Army Medical Center in
San Antonio, Texas, Katz made
a visit in August 2006 and after
touring the hospital and seeing
the faces blown away by IED's,
he was determined to help out
any way he could.
On returning home he talked
to the Director of Plastic Surgery
and others into going to
Brooke Medical Center to see
what could be done. Although
Barry McGuire “Eve Of Destruction”
and John York in Covina
By George Ogden
Covina — Barry McGuire’s
60’s song “Eve of Destruction”
climbed the chart ahead of it’s
time. During the Vietnam war,
this song had a lot of truth and
meaning. What is interesting, it
still applies today.
Barry McGuire teamed up
with John York (Byrds” for the
"Trippin the 60's" gig.
They appeared at the Fret
House in Covina. The two of
them put on a great show and
with Barry 73 years young is still
cooking.
John York is still hot with the
strings and doesn’t seem to age.
Barry and John played a number
of tunes from the era and
gave a fun history on how the
songs came about and their history.
Keep an eye out for these
guys. However, right now
McGuire is leaving the states
for awhile. McGuire will be in
Europe on tour for a couple of
months and then back in the
area in July for a couple of gigs
and then heads out for the West
Coast tour.
Keep track on these guys as
they are great entertainment.
Visit Barry McGuire’s
and cheese special on Fridays
but you can always choose
from their menu. I like the tacos,
spaghetti and chili, as well as
the friendly atmosphere, excellent
service of George, the
waiter, as well as waitresses
Mariana, Carol, Connie, and
Erica who give their best to their
customers.
I am confident that once you
have tried the Palms you will be
back again and again. Good luck
to "The Palms" now and in the
future.
Mend Military Vets Donations Needed
the Army Hospital was doing
great work for these wounded
soldiers, they could not provide
the level of plastic and reconstructive
surgery that UCLA
could, so a partnership was
formed. By the fall of 2007 logistics
had been worked out so
that the first patient arrived from
Brooke Medical Center. Katz
did not stop with making "Operation
Mend" happen. His
Foundation helps families with
uncovered costs such as lodging.
The doctors, nurses and
support staff for these surgeries
volunteer their time.
The American Legion Auxiliary,
since getting involved, has
donated $4,500 because the
nation's veterans are their foremost
concern. Donations are
always welcome for costs of
the surgeries and that is where
everyone can help. Checks
should be made payable to "The
UCLA Foundation" and earmarked
"Operation Mend",
Plastic Surgery", and mailed to
