showing people haw the boys had to fight over there. And
Miss Daley and Miss took me down thexe - that was a
big deal! Even bought me something before they took me

Harvey: Friends from work .. .
Lewis: They was very nice people; Miss died here
a few years ago and I lost track of Miss Daley many years
ago. Helen lived in the neighborhood; in fact, she
lived on 37th Street just off Hickory Avenue for years and
then she married Ms. Langenfelter lived on Hampden Avenue,
600 block. That's where she lived when she died.
Harvey: Do you remember what hours you worked at Meadow
Mill? Your first job - were you called a bobbin boy . . .
is that what they call it, a bobbin boy?
Lewis: Yes . . . bobbin boy.
Harvey: Do you remember the hours you worked?
Lewis: Well, I worked at Meadow Mill was ten hours, six
days a week. My first pay was four dollars and change,
because Mr. MacDonald asked me how much I had and I told him
it was the most I ever had at one time, and he said if it
was a million dollars it still wouldn't be enaugh.
Harvey: Who was that . . . Mr. MacDonaId?
Lewis: Mr. MacDonald, the boss . . .he knew me and he told
me that and I found out through life, no matter haw much you
made you could always use a little bit more. And thatms
the way life i$. That's what it's all about. If it was up
to you, you'd still be wanting more.
