course, when I went to 52 school that was all done away
with; we didn't have no more manual training - it was more
or less preparing for high school. And 1 m et a few of my
old school mates in Late years; they've all went ahead and
had a good life in Baltimore.
Harvey: Ok, was there any special qualification to get
into the Prep School down there on 24th Street?
Lewis : Well, I guess . People that
was exceptionally fast in picking up stuff and knowing stuff;
in other words, going down there - when we came out of
there we went right into the second year of high school.
We took up language; German and Latin and makhematics, and
down there you changed classes every half hour; you had a
home room, but you didn't have a home teacher. And after
that school progressed so far then they finally moved it -
that was after my time - to Cathedral Street right there
between Preston and Biddle Street. That was the first
school that they picked you out of according to your marks
and quick learners, or whatever you want to say, I call it a
high I.Q. called it: we didn't get the Q or I [laughs].
Hasvey: Were most of the kids in that school f rom Hampden,
or did they come from all over the city?
Lewis: No, they were from all over the city. At 52 school
that was from all the schools in the city sent them there.
I'd say from our section out here we had maybe 25, may 30;
not over that. Because it was not a big school; might have
net been that many-1 never counted, because every six months
