now it was before my . . . the last £am. that I knowed that
operated was Roach's, where Maryland Casualty is, and I
nevex can remember the man's name up here on Falls Road.
The farm house is still standing, one of them. But where
Medfield and all built up there. But we boys used to go
swimming at the trestle and we'd come up there sometimes,
steal roasting ears out of there and take them down, build a
fire down in the old meadow there. And he'd run us, of
course, if ha seen us. Same way with and sickle pears and
stuff - used to go steal sickle pears and he run us if he
seen us, but he never shot any of us at all. We steal apples
out of Poole. Of course, with Poole more than anything
else had a lot of apple trees. The boys go in these
and get green apples, afraid make them sick. But the police
never could catch them. Just as you about
7 foot with fences. Just about the time you went to jump
over the fence, that piece of leather the police had around
their belly and they were mounted police. He could always
catch you - one or two raps with that, and you went over
the fence. You cleared the top of the fence when you was
up on that rail, but he never could catch you. Be didn't
want to catch you, anyway - the old Officers Dunn, old man
Boon@ . . . And that was what boys done those days. That was
the most mischevious thing. I mean, if you broke a window,
you went home and told about it. If you didn't, somebody
else told on you anyway. You paid for it. Boys had stone
battle - weren't any angels.
