Harvey: Ok, who was your uncle who was a boss in the
Rope Room, Lampwick Room?
Lewis: That was my great uncle, Jess Lewis. Worked in
the mill for years and then Crown, Cork and Seal got h im to
go down there; didn't have much a£ an education, but he
could design a tuff. He had charge of the rope room,
lampwick, mailbag.
Harvey: And you told me the man who ran the saloon at
Lafayette and Falls Road . . . what was his name?
Lewis: Stocksdale run the saloon before Prohibition. That
was another, . .they all from out of town - they all
come from out of town with their Load, stop there and get a
beer and maybe hit the free lunch counter. Because all
saloons had free lunch counters in those days, but see when
we used to come up when we come up we went
had to came up Calvert Street. Then they built ,the Falls-
way. Fallsway over from Milford Avenue on down to Pratt
Street, the other side 05 Pratt Street. It's open from
Lombard Street now. Then we used to come up, come up Falls-
way and come around and up and always stopped in there.
And that was one of the stops. Of course, today all that
stuff's gone; Fallsway is about ready to go, you might as
well say. But see, the Jones Falls was clean for years.
Down there in Clipper Road, where they used to have the
filtration plant. Clipper M i l l and Mt. Vernon had theirs.
All them places, they had what you call cesspool almost
now, small filtration.
