Wetherell cites
achievements,
disappointments
The Turks and Caicos Islands might be closer
to returning to self government if not for
delays in the Commission of Inquiry and the
righting of public finance, but His Excellency
the Gov. Gordon Wetherell said there have
been several important accomplishments under
his watch.
“As I leave here, I do so
very confident that the
future of the Turks and
Caicos Islands is a very
bright one,” he said at a
press conference during
his final Advisory Council
meeting Aug. 11.
First among achieve-
Wetherell
ments that he cited was
revision of the Constitution,
one of the major
milestones set by the U.K. for return to elected
government. The document will take force 30
days prior to the next elections, which the governor
believes will take place in 2012.
Revision of the Crown land policy to protect
the country’s “single biggest capital resource”
from being mismanaged and undersold also
topped his list. Huge tracts of Crown land were
sold at incredible discounts and in protected
areas, although many have been recovered and
a new policy developed to protect government
land in the future.
Some have complained that investigations
into alleged government corruption have
taken too long, but the governor thinks both
the Special Investigation and Prosecution
Team (SIPT) and the Civil Recovery Team
have made good progress, and he hoped the
SIPT would “move very fairly soon to the next
phase” of prosecutions.
Many positive steps have been taken to
strengthen the government’s financial man-
Forum OKs revised taxi bill
The Consultative Forum roundly
rejected a suggestion by one member
to allow resorts and hotels into the
taxi business, but members passed a
bill that was a compromise between
taxi drivers and hoteliers.
The measure, which still must
be signed into law by the governor,
makes legal a temporary arrangement
worked out earlier this year between
both sides.
The bill approved by the forum at its
monthly meeting Aug. 16 says hotels
and resorts can use luxury cars or limousines
to provide only “complementary
shuttle service to passengers from
any airport or dock to the specific
hotel or resort and from the specific
hotel or resort to any airport or dock
or between hotels or resorts belonging
to the same group or under the same
management.”
They are not allowed to take guests
to stores and other places, a service reserved
for licensed private taxis, limousines
and buses — all referred to as
public service vehicles.
Taxi drivers argued that they would
be put out of business if hotels and resorts
could offer full taxi service, but
forum member John Phillips said not
Turks and Caicos Utilities Ltd. has requested
TCU said the rate increase is to recover
the costs the company incurred
in the restoration of the distribution
system after damages caused by Hurricane
The governor decided not to consider
the increase until after an ongoing
government says the objective of the
review is to develop a fairer, appropriate
and more transparent regulatory
regime for delivery and financing of
electricity services throughout TCI.
TCU invoked section 34(4) of the
Electricity Ordinance, which placed
the legal obligation on the governor to
appoint an outside expert to conduct
an inquiry into the reasonableness of
the tariff proposal.
Appointed to conduct the inquiry
was Dr. Virendra Ajodhia, a regulatory
economist with doctorate in en-
TCI gets high ranking in economic potential list
The Turks & Caicos Islands ranked sixth in the region for the quality
of life provided to its residents.
The Turks and Caicos Islands
ranks among the top
Central American and Caribbean
countries for its future
economic potential and quality
of life, according to the recently
released rankings in fDi Magazine.
fDi Magazine is the flagship
publication for the fDi Intelligence
portfolio, the leading
provider of foreign direct investment
intelligence, and is
published by The Financial Times Ltd.
The TCI was listed as the third best, a huge
nod for the country in the global market.
The high ranking in economic potential
shines a light on the growth opportunities
within the country. TCInvest CEO Conrad
Higgs has noted that despite the international
recession, which has negatively affected foreign
direct investment flows worldwide, the TCI
continues to be recognized as a safe and profitable
place to invest.
The “beautiful by
nature” islands ranked
sixth in the region for
the quality of life provided
to its residents.
Criteria included life
expectancy, infant
mortality rate, crime
rate and gross domestic
product per capita.
These top honours
helped the TCI to its
position in the top 10,
landing eighth out of 33 countries surveyed
within the region overall as a country of the future.
fDi’s Countries of the Future shortlists are
created by an independent collection of data
by the fDi Intelligence division across Caribbean
and Central American countries. This information
was organised under six categories:
OLINT’s Smith gets 30-year U.S. prison sentence
David Smith was sentenced Aug. 11
in the United States to 30 years in prison
for defrauding more than 6,000 investors
out of more than $220 million in a ponzi
scheme involving his Overseas Locket International
Corporation and other businesses.
Smith, 42, a Jamaican who was living
in the Turks and Caicos Islands on Providenciales,
must first serve 6½ years in Her
Majesty’s Prison on Grand Turk before the
U.S. will seek to extradite him to serve the
remainder of the 30-year sentence, with
credit for time served in the TCI.
Smith could have received a sentence of
up to life in prison in the U.S., but he was
given a lower sentence because he has been
cooperating with investigators in recovering
a $128 million judgment filed against
him in the United States. Smith also got
leniency in the TCI for his cooperation.
Census set for early 2012
The Turks and Caicos Islands
government announced
Aug. 17 that a census will be
conducted beginning in the
first quarter of 2012. The last
census was conducted in 2001.
Funding and logistics for
the census are in place to coordinate
with regional studies,
and the official launch
will take place next month.
In order to educate the
public about the upcoming
census, government will
be holding logo, slogan and
jingle competitions. The logo
competition has already taken
place in secondary schools,
and the winners will be announced
shortly.
Residents of the Turks and
Caicos Islands — regardless
of nationality — are invited
to take part in the slogan and
jingle competitions.
Slogans should not be more
than 10 words in length and
should promote the census.
Prizes will be:
do that on a scale that would
hurt the business of taxi drivers.
His suggestion was voted down
11-2.
However, Phillips was in the
majority in rejecting a proposal
by taxi drivers that would allow
a driver to hold only one kind of
license, meaning one couldn’t
have a private limo license and a
taxi license.
Several members said that
while that restriction might work
on Providenciales, it would prevent
drivers on smaller islands
from performing all types of
transportation, including tours
on North and Middle Caicos.
Phillips said it would also
hurt some drivers on Providenciales,
citing the example of a licensed
driver who drove 9-5 at a
resort with a resort license who
wanted to make some money
after hours. “Why is he not allowed
to make a few bucks by
driving a limo?”
“I don’t really care what the taxi
drivers say about the ability to
control a man and his livelihood,
I think it’s very wrong to legislate
Both guilty pleas shielded his wife
from prosecution in both countries.
Not only is Smith helping with
the recovery of OLINT-related assets,
but he has been helping the
TCI’s Special Investigation and
Prosecution Team (SIPT) inquiry
into allegations of corruption
against former TCI government officials
and others.
If his cooperation is substantial,
U.S. prosecutors can ask that his U.S.
sentence be reduced.
According to court documents, for
more than three years, Smith executed a
scheme to defraud more than 6,000 investors
located in Florida and the Caribbean
out of more than $220 million. Smith led
investors to believe that he was investing
their money in foreign currency trading
and earning, on average, 10 percent per
The jingle should be a short
song depicting any aspect of
the census to be used throughout
the Census Promotional
Campaign.
The jingle should not be
more than 45 seconds in
length and must not have
been previously entered into a
competition, published, selfpublished
or published on a
website or broadcast prior to
entry. Prizes will be:
All entries should be sent to
The deadline for entries is
in that direction,” he said.
Some members suggested
making the one-license restriction
apply only to Providenciales,
but the majority ended up removing
the restriction that was
recommended by taxi drivers.
“Every taxi driver had a
copy of the draft,” said Desiree
Downes of the Attorney General’
office. “We explained to
them the consequences of restricting
it this way, and they
still thought that this was the
best thing for them.”
Attorney General Huw Shepheard
warned that the new bill
might not achieve the desired
effect on Grand Turk because
the former government granted
certain transportation rights to
the Cruise Center that might go
against taxi drivers’ wishes.
The bill leaves in place the requirement
that only Turks and
Caicos Islanders who are at least
21 can hold such a public service
vehicle license. But it does add
the requirement that drivers successfully
complete a customer
service training course provided
by the ministry with responsibility
for tourism.
David Smith
agement, but he sees that area as
both an achievement and a disappointment.
“With the mismanagement
that had taken place over a number
of years and the advent of the
global economic and financial
crisis, a lot of the attention which
we would have liked to have devoted
to implementing other
recommendations of the Commission
of Inquiry in more timely
fashion or indeed milestones
that have been subsequently set,
a lot of that energy and effort was
diverted to getting the finances
of the TCI right,” he said.
“But ultimately I think that the
work done in that area has put
the TCI in a much better position
going forward.”
He was disappointed that the
completion of the Commission
of Inquiry, which was originally
scheduled to report in November
2008, did not happen until
July 2009.
The commission report found
evidence of government corruption,
called for suspension of
elected government, and sug-
powers to summon evidence,
take evidence on oath and require
A public meeting for Grand
is a highly volatile and risky
investment vehicle that is
regulated in the United
States by the Commodity
Futures Commission and
the National Futures Association.
Smith also conspired
with others to launder approximately
$128 million of proceeds that
were obtained as a result of the wire fraud
scheme.
U.S. Attorney Robert E. O’Neill thanked
other agencies that helped on Smith’s case,
including the SIPT, the Financial Crimes
Unit of the Royal Turks and Caicos Police
Force, the Financial Services Commission
in Jamaica, and the governments of the
gested a number of steps to putting
the country in order. However,
help was slow in coming on
several fronts.
“It would have been helpful
in retrospect if some of the
strengthening of the team that
has been available to us in recent
months had been available at a
much earlier time,” the governor
said. “But I think we are now finally
well equipped on all fronts
to make the progress that is necessary
to meet the milestones in
time for elections during 2012.
“Of course we would have been
in a much better position had we
had the resources that have been
too, and I am very grateful to the
of providing the guarantee for
has really allowed I think the
Turks and Caicos Islands to live
reasonably comfortably through
the last several months on a basis
Sea turtle fishery management draft ready for review
After two years of studying sea
turtles in the Turks and Caicos
Islands, Amdeep Sanghera has
returned from the U.K. to complete
work on proposed measures
to improve the management of
the country’s traditional turtle
fishery.
“Many people across the TCI
participated in helping to decide
these new turtle management
measures,” said Sanghera, TCI
Turtle Project officer. “So I’m glad
to be back to show everyone what
we’ve come up with together.”
Following his extensive community
discussions last year,
Sanghera will be touring the
islands to gather local opinion
proposed new measures, which
were drafted by project partners
Department of Environment and
Coastal Resources (DECR), and
the Marine Conservation Society
(MCS) and the University of Exeter
in the U.K.
The proposed management
measures have been designed using
the information collected by
Sanghera and colleagues during
the first two years of the project.
They gathered biological data
about TCI turtles, social information
about the use of turtles and
their importance to islanders,
and the opinions of fishermen
and community members across
the TCI on the future management
of the TCI turtle fishery.
Currently, the only TCI laws
protecting turtles prohibit taking
a turtle while it is nesting and
catching a turtle that is under 20
inches in diameter.
In the coming weeks, Sanghera
will again talk to as many fishermen
and other interested parties
as possible throughout the islands
to record further opinion about
the proposed new measures. This
information will then be used to
fine-tune a final turtle fishery
management plan and proposed
regulations to be presented by the
DECR to the Advisory Council
for approval later this year.
The DECR asks that anyone
who wants to have input on the
Reef Fund gets big donation
to install dive site moorings
The Turks & Caicos Reef Fund announced
Aug. 16 that it has received a
major anonymous donation that will
pay for the volunteer organization to
install 20-25 dive site moorings.
The donation is earmarked for the
installation of moorings throughout
the islands for use by the local dive
operators on each island. These moorings,
most of which are in the national
marine parks, eliminate the need for
the dive boat operators to drop anchors
and reduce the risk of damage to the
fragile reefs.
The TCRF estimates that this donation
should enable the organization to
install approximately 20-25 moorings
on dive sites off the coasts of Providenciales,
French Cay, West Caicos, Grand
Turk and Salt Cay.
TCRF staff have already been in contact
with many of the local dive operators
on all the islands to gather their
input on the locations for the new moorings.
TCRF will also be working closely
with the Department of Environmental
and Coastal Resources (DECR) on the
installation of the moorings.
Don Stark, chairman of the TCRF,
said that the project will involve replacing
some moorings on dive sites which
had previously had moorings, as well as
installing moorings on new sites to add
to the variety of sites available for use
by dive operators.
“We know that the shortage of moorings
results in dive operators being
forced to drop anchor on many sites
which can cause damage to coral reefs,”
Stark said. “We hope that this project
will reduce, if not eliminate, the need
to drop anchor on dive sites.”
Since many of the dive sites that
will receive new moorings are located
in marine protected areas, TCRF will
submit project plans to DECR for review
and approval before any of the
work will begin. TCRF expects that the
initial phase of this project will begin
before the end of this year.
Founded in 2010, TCRF is a volunteer-run
organization that provides
funding for education, research and
conservation programs to individuals,
organizations and agencies that
help to preserve and protect the marine
environment of the TCI. More than 85
percent of all funds raised through voluntary
contributions from divers and
snorkelers visiting the TCI are directed
to the fund’s programs.
Penalties for late taxes increased
Hotels, restaurants and telecommunications
businesses that don’t pay
taxes on time will be hit with stiffer
penalties under bills approved Aug. 16
by the Consultative Forum.
Under current law, hotels and restaurants
required to charge and remit
taxes to government would face a penalty
of 20 percent of the tax owed, but
there is no further penalty no matter
how long the business takes to pay,
said Permanent Secretary of Finance
Delton Jones.
The new penalty will be 20 percent
for the first month taxes are late, then
compounded 10 percent for every
month thereafter.
Finance officials said compliance
has been “quite good,” although some
businesses were not paying on time.
They also noted that collections have
been up significantly, reflecting in the
recent boom in tourist visits this season.
The government also intends to start
cracking down on people who rent private
homes and villas but are not paying
the 11 percent tax as they should.
Telecommunication businesses currently
do not have to pay any penalty
for late payment of taxes, Jones said.
The new law will allow penalties of 10
percent for each month taxes are late.
The law also will give government
better power and means to determine
taxes, and provides for an appeals
process for disputes over taxes owed,
Jones said.
Both bills must be signed into law by
the governor before taking effect.
The forum was scheduled to consider
bills to levy new taxes on financial
institution transactions, insurance
premiums other than life and medical,
and on water providers.
Jones said those were deferred because
of concerns expressed by forum
members.
Those taxes were scheduled to take
effect Sept. 1.
proposed measures should call
Sanghera at 332-8325 so that he
can arrange a meeting.
Sanghera also returns with
three new satellite transmitter
tags to attach to large green turtles.
During the first two years of
the project, Sanghera and colleagues
attached satellite tags to
two adult green turtles and four
adult hawksbill turtles. Suzie, the
first green turtle tagged in June
2009, surprised everyone with
her 3,700-mile round trip around
the Caribbean.
Last year the other tagged
green turtle, Shyvonne, migrated
466 miles to her feeding grounds
off St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin
Islands. In contrast, the four
hawksbills have not left TCI waters
since they were tagged in the
fall of 2009.
Sanghera hopes to attach the
new tags, one of which is sponsored
by the Amanyara Resort,
to large green turtles captured
on the Caicos Banks. The turtles
Amdeep Sanghera is back
in the TCI to talk about new
turtle fishery management
measures.
will then be tracked via satellite
and online to discover how these
animals behave in the dynamic
tidal environments found on the
banks.
Police give tips on preventing home invasion
A home invasion is every homeowner’s worst
nightmare. For many people their home represents
safety, security and sanctuary.
The Turks and Caicos Islands is still a safe
country to live, work and visit; however, people
should not be complacent. Many crimes are
crimes of opportunity.
You can help to mitigate your risk by following
some of these safety tips:
Protect doors and windows
▶ The areas outside of your main entrance
should be lit properly so that there are no dark
shadows, where someone can hide.
▶ Keep your curtains drawn, shades and blinds
down as far as possible so that people cannot
look into your home, especially after nightfall.
▶ Keep all entrances where you live well illuminated.
▶ Install effective deadbolt locks.
▶ Never leave your doors or windows unlocked.
Keep them locked at all times even if
you live in an extremely safe neighborhood
and even if you are at home.
▶ Have secure locks on all windows and be
sure to use them.
▶ Use high quality locks and strike plates on
doors to prevent kick-ins and pry bars.
▶ If your house or bedroom is equipped with a
sliding glass door make sure there are secondary
locking devices such as a piece of doweling,
pin-locking device, or some kind of mechanism
to prevent the door from being lifted out of its
tracks.
▶ Keep porch light and lights that surrounds
your house on all night or on a timer.
▶ Leave a light on in one or two rooms inside
of your home.
▶ Routinely check all access points to your
home: windows, doors, basements access and
garage door. Test and examine each latch, lock,
window and door.
▶ If you come home and find a door or window
open or signs of forced entry. DO NOT GO IN-
SIDE! Go to a safe place and call the police.
▶ Always have your door key ready so you can
enter your home without delay.
▶ If you live alone, when friends and relatives
drop you off have them enter the house with
you to ensure that everything is safe before
they leave you alone.
▶ Be a concerned neighbor and call 911 about
suspicious people in the neighborhood.
▶ If you see someone outside your home or
your neighbor’s home who looks suspicious,
alert your neighbors and contact the police.
▶ Get to know your neighbors and work with
them to keep your neighborhood safe.
If you are a victim
▶ Even though you are nervous try to stay
calm.
▶ Concentrate on getting information so you
can be an effective witness.
▶ Look carefully at the intruders, even if they
are masked. Is there something unique about
them such as scars, tattoos, large nose?
▶ What are they wearing? Listen to everything
they say and how they say it.
▶ Catch any distinguishing odors such as tobacco,
also alcohol or aftershave.
After a home invasion
▶ Go to a safe place.
▶ Call the Police
▶ Preserve evidence — do not change your
clothes or disturb the scene of the crime. If you
need medical attention, call 911.
The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police
Force has put measures in place to help ensure
people’s safety and security, but the police
need the public’s assistance.
The RTCIPF is committed to making our
country a safer place to live. But we cannot do
it alone, we must all work together.
Youth enjoy Shakespeare workshop
Youngsters gathered at the
Edward C. Gartland Youth
Centre this summer to relive
William Shakespeare’s memorable
tales.
Although the backdrop may
not have been of Italian castles
and majestic coliseums, the
young actors showed heart and
soul in their performances.
Roxann Wake-Forbes, director
of the youth centre, and
Barbara Pankhurst of the Turks
and Caicos Friends of the Arts
Foundation (TCFAF) enlisted
Philadelphia-based artists Scott
Cannon and Susan Cade to
coach the youth in Shakespearean
acting by organizing a summer
workshop.
The week long magical workshop
introduced 27 young TCI
residents to the legendary writer’s
historic plays, such as “As
You Like It,” “Othello” and “Romeo
and Juliet.” The workshop
concluded with a live performance
of “Romeo and Juliet,”
which was cast by the students.
After casting was complete,
the students eagerly began to
learn their lines as they divided
up into Montagues and Capulets,
distinguished by red and
blue sashes to capture the flavor
of Shakespeare’s timeless
love story. Scott coached the
actors in each scene, emphasizing
proper diction, projection of
their voices and staging cues.
Each morning started with
spirited warm-up exercises to
get the youths minds and body’s
ready for acting. The multi-disciplinary
workshop included
ever so popular activities such
as sword fighting and Renaissance
dance choreography, as
well as arts and crafts projects
to make their jeweled masks
and crowns for the much anticipated
live performance at the
end of the course.
The live performance was
staged at the Youth Centre,
where the acting class performed
a 30-minute “Romeo
and Juliet” recital for the au-
Prison officer gets Long Service Award
Retiring senior Prison Officer Eric Forbes has been recognised
for his 28 years of dedicated service to his Majesty’s
Prison and the Turks and Caicos Islands.
Forbes was presented with a shield by His Excellency the
Gov. Gordon Wetherell during a ceremony at the prison in
late July.
The governor also toured the prison with Superintendent
Ian Sargent to see how funding from the U.K. Overseas Territories
Students were pleased with
the week-long sessions. When
asked what they liked best about
the workshop, students replied
with a variety of answers, such
as “everything,” “acting and
reading,” “sword fighting,”
“learning Shakespeare,” and
“when we got to act the play
out.”
One student was asked why
they joined the workshop: “Because
I have always liked to act.
I think it was a good time for me
to try.”
These workshops were made
possible by the hard work of
Keep cool at Fairway’s
bar & grill this summer
It’s that time of the year when Turks
and Caicos Islands temperatures are
soaring, and visitors and residents need
to find satisfying ways to keep cool.
A local bar and restaurant is keeping
things extra cool for their patrons this
summer by turning down their ice-cold
air conditioners.
Fairway’s Bar and Grill, located at the
Provo Golf Course, will be blasting cold
breezes indoors throughout August,
September and October. Drop by the
bar for an early evening beverage of cold
beer or a cool glass of white wine, and
share an appetizer or two with a friend.
For the days you cannot make it to
Fairway’s to take advantage of their
comfortable atmosphere, follow these
easy non-air conditioned tips to stay
cool this summer:
▶ Keep a spray bottle in the fridge
Keep a small spray bottle full of water
in the refrigerator. When you’re feeling
hot, mist your face and neck a few times
with the cold water for instant relief.
Add a few slices of cucumber to the water
for extra cooling, or use weak green
tea instead of water — the green tea will
cool you off and improve your complexion,
thanks to all of those antioxidants.
▶ Place an ice cube on your pulse points
This is so easy, and it really works!
Take an ice cube, and place it in a washcloth
or handkerchief. Hold the ice cube
to your pulse points in your wrists and/
or neck for up to 30 seconds. This is suppose
to cool your body temperature by
3 degrees.
▶ Cold washcloth on your neck
Wet a washcloth with cold water. (If
its really hot, consider placing it in the
freezer for a few minutes.) Wring it out,
and hold it to the back of your neck.
You’ll feel instantly cooler.
▶ Soak your feet in cold water
How many of us have sat with our feet
Fairway’s Bar & Grill at Provo Golf
Course
dangling into a lake or pool and felt immediately
refreshed? You can get that
same cooling effect by filling a small
tub or large pot with cold water and
soaking your feet for a little while. And
if you want a little extra pampering,
why not give yourself a pedicure when
you’re finished soaking your feet?
▶ Wet bandanna
Wet a bandanna with cold water, and
tie it over your head. This will instantly
cool you off, and you can just re-wet the
bandanna as needed to help keep you
cool.
Red Cross General Meeting Notice:
ALL LOCAL
Introducing the 2011-2012 Turks & Caicos Islands Telephone Directory
and The Real TCI Yellow Pages...available in print, online, on your mobile,
and directly in the hands of all the right people, in a way never before
imagined.
Produced by a LOCAL company, our products contain comprehensive,
in depth, and accurate information about the businesses that provide
products and services to the community, for both residents and visitors,
with insight that only a truly LOCAL company can delivery.
If there is any question about the more useful product, our
telephone listings alone are almost fifty percent more than
any other directory, and that is just to begin with. Our online
directory is in a category entirely on its own, bringing
the delivery of information to a whole new level of innovation
and usefulness, with information for residents that
include…
• Business license information and application
forms
• Business name information and registration
forms
•Vehicle registration information and
license renewal forms
• Office hours for Government Departments
• Airline schedules, Postal rates and
cut off times, post office box numbers,
Customs information, and much much
more…
• A comprehensive list of restaurants, categorized by food type
and location.
• A summary of the closest restaurants and activities to each
resort (including the approximate distance and cost to take a
taxi to that business).
• Advanced map and satellite directions that show the exact
location of businesses.
• Tourist activities (listings by location and picture)
• Shopping guides (listings by location and picture)
• Resort and hotel accommodations (listings by location and
picture)
• Video guides introducing the TCI
• An “Island–Hopping Guide” for each of the Islands, for tourists
who wish to visit more than one Island.
And this barely scratches the surface of what our products have to offer, and the best part is….we’re just getting started!

Salt Cay business making a splash in Provo and Grand Turk
The “Salt Ladies” are busy making Salt Cay merchandise.
A once small business from Salt
Cay is making its debut in Providenciales
and Grand Turk.
Salt Cay Salt Works is expanding
its delightfully homemade
creations of salt goods.
When Heidee Williams and
her husband visited Salt Cay back
in 1993 for a scuba diving vacation,
she knew that the island was
something special and kept calling
her to return, year after year.
In 1999, Heidee and her husband
purchased an old salt raker cot-
tage ruins and build a small island
getaway home.
In 2010 while visiting Grand
Turk on a shopping trip with a
friend, they noticed a display of
bath sea salts and scrubs that were
being sold but not made locally,
and she thought to herself, “This
should be done on Salt Cay!” The
rest is history.
Williams and a friend began
collecting buckets full of beautiful,
sparkling sea salt that had
been formed naturally right in
Flavored culinary salts
Salt Cay’s “backyard,” and she
enlisted some island neighbors,
now endearingly called the “Salt
Ladies,” and began to make and
mix all kinds of wonderful salt
products.
“The Salt Ladies” of Salt Cay
Salt Works create formulas and
mixtures for bath salts and scrubs
that are gentle on the skin with
scents that are pleasing and refreshing.
They create soaps that
are attractive in design, yet fragrant
and sudsy for practical, everyday
use.
The group also produces culinary
salts such as the gourmet
finishing salt Fleur de Sel line, or
their deliciously flavored cooking
Salt Cay bath salts
This Week at Graceway Gourmet
salts and even a lime sea salt for
the rim of your Margarita.
What started as a little idea,
Salt Cay Salt Works now employs
six people on a regular
basis, along with opportunities
for many folks to collect salt or
recycle bottles, producing usable
salt products and packaging and
decorating containers for our clients
for extra income.
The local business has been
growing steadily and will soon
have a workshop where the “Salt
Ladies” can work in a cool and
comfortable setting, protected
from sun and rain to keep creating
their cultural crafts. The
workshop will be tucked in a
special place in Porter’s Backyard
and have plenty of storage and
work areas for the growing team.
Distribution of the salt is
also set to increase after the an-
nouncement that two new retail
clients have been added to its
roster. The Bohio Gift Shop on
Grand Turk and Art Provo on
Providenciales have now added
Salt Cay Salt Work merchandise
to their shelves.
“For many years, Salt Cay was
the center of the salt industry in
the Caribbean, and a rich heritage
remains for the people who
call Salt Cay home,” Williams
says. “Drawing from the history
of Salt Cay, it is my mission to use
renewable, organic resources to
create unique products for today’s
modern world.”
It won’t be much of a surprise in
the near future when folks from
all over the world will be salting
their foods, baths and skin with
the clean, sparkling salt from the
ponds on Salt Cay.
Horoscopes
Aries (March 21—April 19)
August 18, 2011
You need to see things in a different light if you
want to get along with someone close to you. They are
struggling to meet you half-way, so put in the same effort.
You will be very happy that you did.
Taurus (April 20—May 20)
Stop letting yourself slide. Those old, nasty habits are
going to come back if you don’t do something now.
Luckily, nothing will break your resolve.
Gemini (May 21—June 20)
Family life has been up in the air, and this is going to
continue. Don’t worry. Everyone is going to be happy
come September. Don’t try to figure out someone’s
secret.
Cancer (June 21—July 22)
You need to observe yourself for a couple days. How
are your actions contributing to the tension at home?
Recognize what you are doing and then find a way to
stop.
Leo (July 23—Aug. 22)
Head games are happening. Do not participate in
them, no matter how sorely tempted you are. Ignore
people who are playing games. You need to be the
better person.
Virgo (Aug. 23—Sept. 22)
You are feeling energized. This is good. You are going
to need it, because life is going to be hectic for a
couple weeks. Just hang in there and things will settle.
Try not to lose your temper with family.
Libra (Sept. 23—Oct. 22)
Your business sense has been good lately. Keep doing
what you are doing. You are slowly creating a new
identity for yourself, one that is much more aware and
sensitive. Someone thinks you have a magic touch.
Scorpio (Oct. 23—Nov. 21)
Everything is changing. You especially notice those
close to you beginning to grow as people. Help them
in any way you can, and bite your tongue while you are
doing it.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22—Dec. 21)
You are absolutely ready for this new adventure, but
you must listen to your intuition. Take some time and
reflect on how you want things to unfold. Listen to
what your gut is telling you.
Capricorn (Dec. 22—Jan. 19)
You might be feeling a little down this week. Don’t
make any major financial decisions, because your
mood is making you see things that aren’t there. Take a
breather, and maybe a stroll down memory lane.
Aquarius (Jan. 20.—Feb. 18)
Stop listening to your critics. They are criticizing you
for all the wrong reasons. Let them go. It’s time you
truly invest in yourself and your own happiness. Follow
your heart.
Pisces (Feb. 19—March 20)
Your eyes are going to be opened once again. There
is one flaw in your plan, and you need to address it. As
long as you do, success will come your way.
Preparing your children for an emergency
Whenever a hurricane threatens a
community, the parents and grandparents
get very busy with hurricane
preparations. Kids are often fearful
and have their own hurricane preparations
to make.
It is important to take the time to
explain to children what a hurricane is
and what they need to know to be just
as prepared as an adult. The more children
know about the storm and safety
procedures, the more confident they
will be. But keep it simple — detailed
information is useless if children can’t
digest it.
Start out by explaining to your children
that a hurricane is a giant, rainy
windstorm, destructive and dangerous,
but survivable with preparation
and precaution.
Younger children may have trouble
understanding the idea of a hurricane.
Talk to them instead about its effects.
They need to know that a hurricane
can destroy homes and leave families
without food, water and electricity.
Ask children, whatever their age, to
make a list of what they do during a
typical day. Explain to them that those
activities might change if a hurricane
hits: School might close; they may not
get to play outside; they may have to
eat different foods.
It’s important for children to feel
they are a part of the preparations.
Allow children to help plan and pack
safety kits, help check hurricane shutters,
make preparations for their pets.
Children should be reminded of
their hurricane lessons throughout
the year. A crash course in hurricanes
only hours before one arrives may
cause children to panic. One safety
expert says, “Be prepared and have a
plan.”
“The best thing parents and guardians
can do is make sure everyone in
the family is part of the plan,” says
Nancy McBride, National Safety Director
for the National Center for
Missing & Exploited Children. “Know
the names and addresses of babysitters
or friends your children may be with
at the time of the disaster or evacuation.
And take your address book with
you when you leave, along with the
family photos.”
Also important is to be sure that
each child has identification with
them. Photo IDs should have the
name, address, birth date, medical
information and home phone number
of the person carrying it. Also include
phone numbers of relatives, in and out
of the country.
Experts also advise carrying current
photos of your children, especially if
you evacuate. Give relatives outside
the area (or other emergency contacts)
photos, dates of birth, medical and
other essential information. Coach
children, if old enough, on whom to
contact in case you are separated.
If forced to evacuate your home, engage
children in a game of “What do
I look like?” Have your child describe
what you look like and what you’re
wearing.
If leaving the home, note how the
child is dressed. This may seem obvious,
but often we forget these things
in stressful situations. And recognize
that children may be fearful and agitated,
and take steps to reassure them
that you will help them cope with the
situation.
How can you enjoy the comfort of
insuring the contents of your condo
or apartment?
