- The union members on the Seine boats in Area 8 decided to continue
their job action. By 12:00 noon, there were only 30 of the 150
original seines in the harbor. The remainder had departed for
Vancouver or the Prince Rupert areas. Only the independent seine
crews continued to fish.
- The seine fishing at the bottom boundary picked up after 5:00 p.m. and
continued to range between 200-1000 Pinks per set until the area
closed at 9:00 p.m. Seine fishing in 8-5 also improved during that
time. This was the only indication of good Pink fishing during the
two day opening.
The gill nets that operated in Fisher Fitz Hugh only fished for short
periods during the day.
- Chums in North Bentinck Arm were reported as being dark.
CURRENT WEEK RECOMMENDATION
To extend all areas by I day for the following reasons:
1. Provide an extra days Pink fishing for seines.
2. To provide a window after the 1 day fishery for chum and
steelhead conservation.
The recommendation was rejected by Region who required us to stick with
the mid week seine closure that was planned to address quality concerns.
That option would require us to extend gill nets in the BCCNA resulting
in 4 days of fishing on chum stocks that appear weak.
The only other option was to close as scheduled.
selected as the best of two evils.
NEXT WEEK'S RECOMMENDATION
To fish this week using a traditional fishing pattern
Sunday. To move the boundary in 8-11 to Flagpole Pt.
8-16 to nets.
That option was
starting at 6 pm
To open subarea
The recommendation to fish using a traditional fishing pattern was
rejected by Region in favour of starting out with the same pattern as
last week. The boundary changes in 8-11 and addition of Subarea 8-16
was accepted. See Week 31 Weekly Management Plan form for details of
the opening.
