From experience, I have found that
the number of an animal most easily
read, is the tattooi above the top vein
of the ear.
Step one is therefore to put the year
letter plust the sequence number in
the top half of your tattooi pliers and
the herd designation letters in the
bottom half o f your pliers, for
example:
Voorvoegsel + Jaartal + volg
nommer.

If your are not sure how the numbers
will look when tattooed, use a pice of
paper and clamp it with the pliers.
The best tattooing ink is ZEBO
STOVE POLISH or A BLACK LEAD
IN SUSPENSION.
The calf to be tattooed, must be held
firmly. The tattoo in the pliers must
then be thoroughly wet with the
tattooi ink. (An old toothbrush is the
ideal applicator).
The pliers are then postioned in the
calf’s LEFT EAR WITH THE TOP

NUMBER AND THE HERD
DESIGNATION LETTERS. Making
sure that they are not too near the
end of the ear or too deep in towards
the head. THE PLIERS THEN ARE
CLOSED WITH A HARD, POSITIVE
ACTION AND HELD IN CLOSED
POSITION FOR AT LEAST THIRTY
(30) SECONDS. This allows the
holes to remain open for a while after
the pliers have been opened and
removed.
Immediately after removing the
pliers, the TATTOO INK SHOULD
BE THOROUGHLY WORKED IN
WITH THE SAME TOOTHBRUSH
THAT IS WET WITH TATTOO INK.
SPEND AT LEAST FIFTEEN (15()
SECONDS BRUSHING THE INK
INTO THE TATTOO.
The animal is then released and if
possible, left for at least three weeks
before reading thenumber in the ear.
If one takes care, the numbers in the
ear will be clearly visible even when
the animal is very old.
