3. The National Occupational Classification in Belgium
Statistics Belgium (NIS) is responsible for the Belgian occupational classification. The
occupational classification has been used both in the Dutch part of Belgium and nd in Wallonia.
Belgium has two national languages, Dutch and French, and therefore the NOC is also available in
these two languages. The differences between the two languages are that some occupations have
more translations in French than in Dutch, one occupation has two translations in Dutch and only
one translation in French, one occupation only exist in the Dutch translation (see Table 3 for an
overview of these differences). This latter is the result of difference in type of soil in both parts of
Belgium: flax did not grow in n the French part of Belgium and therefore the number of flax workers
did not need to be measured in here.

3.1 Description of the Belgi Belgian NOC
Although the Belgian occupational classification of 1991 is based on ISCO ISCO-88 (See Annex
1), it has different characteristics (See Appendix 3 for the structure of the Belgian NOC) NOC). The
lowest level of the Belgian classification is the occupation pation level and not the unit group, like it is in
ISCO-88. Table 4 shows the distribution of the sub sub-major groups, unit-groups groups and occupations
across the major groups. . The Belgi Belgian NOC consists of more major groups (1), more sub sub-major
groups (37), and more unit groups (11) than ISCO-88.
