Recommendation 5.1:<br />

<strong>Birmingham</strong> Jobs Fund<br />

The Steering Group is pleased that its<br />

recommendation to establish a<br />

<strong>Birmingham</strong> Jobs Fund has been<br />

adopted by the <strong>Birmingham</strong><br />

Commission on Youth Unemployment.<br />

The <strong>city</strong> council will be working closely<br />

with partners to create at least 1000<br />

jobs for young people between 18 – 24<br />

year olds in long term unemployment.<br />

Recommendation 5.3:<br />

Cento Action Pl<strong>an</strong><br />

Work is taking place with Centro to<br />

develop a youth tr<strong>an</strong>sport action pl<strong>an</strong>,<br />

which will be shaped by a youth<br />

conference on tr<strong>an</strong>sport in 2013 (see<br />

progress on recommendation 4.1).<br />

Work Based Learning at Small<br />

Heath School<br />

Small Heath School has<br />

established strong relationships<br />

with m<strong>an</strong>y local businesses<br />

including Dunlop, <strong>Birmingham</strong><br />

International Airport, Bromford<br />

Industries <strong>an</strong>d Aston Villa. The<br />

school has fully embedded<br />

Work Based Learning (WBL) in<br />

the curriculum <strong>an</strong>d its approach<br />

has been recognised by<br />

OfSTED <strong>an</strong>d by national<br />

government.<br />

WBL approaches like those<br />

adopted by Small Heath School<br />

appear to help to produce better<br />

qualified, more socially aware<br />

<strong>an</strong>d more rounded individuals<br />

who are better equipped for the<br />

workplace.
