Deprivation produced by the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG)
measures the deprivation levels of areas across the country.
The Index of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) brings a number of different elements together
Birmingham, with the darker (red and purple) highlighting the most deprived and the lighter
Birmingham ranks as the 9th most deprived local authority in the UK, with significant
pockets in the top 1% most deprived areas nationally.
35% of children are classified as living in child poverty (2010). In some wards this is as
high as 52%.
