Day 3 Wednesday 07:00 - 15:00
Alexandria - EGYPT
BRUSh up on your history at El alamein. this town
on Egypt’s north coast was the setting for two of the
most important battles in World War two. Winston
Churchill wrote ‘before alamein we never had a
victory. after alamein we never had a defeat.’ the
highlights here include a military museum, where you
can find out how Britain toppled the nazi invasion of
africa, and a commonwealth cemetery.
Day 4 Thursday 05:00 - 19:00
Port Said (for Cairo) - EGYPT
dEBatE what happened to the Sphinx’s nose during
a visit to the giza plateau. legends suggest it was a
victim of a cannon ball shot, fired by napoleon’s
soldiers during the Battle of the pyramids in 1798.
But other historians claim it was vandalised by a
religious fanatic in the 14th century, after he found
peasants making offerings to the mythical creature.
Day 5 Friday 06:00 - 19:00
Ashdod - ISRAEL
EXploRE the garden of gesthemane, at the foot of
the Mount of olives. this green area is the setting of
several of the Bible’s most important stories and one
of Jerusalem’s best known places. according to the
good book, Jesus’ disciples prayed here the night
before his crucifixion. plus, it’s the place where Judas
betrayed him by handing him over to the police.
Day 6 Saturday 12:00 - 18:00
Larnaca - CYPRUS
altERnatE between shopping and sightseeing in the
pretty village of lefkara. this hilltop hamlet is famous
for producing lace and silver handicrafts, so you can
pick up some souvenirs as you wander through the
cobbled streets. Keep a look out for the Church of St
lazarus, too, – it dates back to the 9th century and is
one of Cyprus’ best Byzantine churches.
Day 7 Sunday 09:00 - 16:00
Alanya - TURKEY
lIStEn to the roar of white water at the waterfall in
Manavgat. the best way to soak up the atmosphere is
to find a table at one of the waterside tea gardens
and order a cup of apple tea. you’ll find a few market
stalls here, too, where you can pick up local
handicrafts as souvenirs.
Day 8 Monday Arrive 08:00
Marmaris - TURKEY
paMpER yourself the natural way at dalyan’s hot
springs. the mud baths and warm waters here are
thought to help with everything from rheumatism to
dry skin. you’ll start your beautification by dunking
yourself in mud as thick as milkshake and, one it’s
dried, you’ll wash yourself off in a sulphur pool. you’ll
be in good company, too – prince Charles, Sting and
dustin hoffman have all had a go.
