Objectives
Spelling and Vocabulary
Students will
add or subtract letters to make
spelling words.
replace words in a sentence with
spelling words.
match spelling words to base
words.
Developing Oral
Language Skills
Words such as removing (/rē m vv ĭng/)
may cause spelling problems if the final
g is not pronounced or is pronounced
carelessly. Write removing, interesting,
trimming, denying, and supplying on the
chalkboard. Have students pronounce the
words, including the final g. Then challenge
them to pronounce the words correctly
as they use them in sentences.
Differentiated Instruction
Providing More Help
Write the base words calm, slim,
remove, deny, sunny, wise, gray, trim,
interest, and supply on the chalkboard.
Have the students write these words on
paper. Have them circle the words that
end with a silent e, draw a box around
those that end with a consonant-y,
underline those that end with a vowel-y,
double underline those that end with
a vowel-consonant in a stressed final
syllable, and put a check next to those
that end with two consonants. Discuss
the suffix attachment rules that pertain
to each ending, as explained in the
mini-lesson.
