Rookwood pupil helps
sporty African children
A pupil
in Year 8 at Rookwood
School, Andover, has helped
African schoolchildren develop their
sporting talent on a recent holiday to
the continent. When Daniel Scott
discovered he would be visiting
Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar over
Christmas, he decided to enlist the
help of his own school to give muchneeded
football shirts to children during the trip.
Called ‘Project FC’, Daniel appealed to both parents and pupils at
Rookwood to donate old football clothing. The school gave a set of
shirts and Daniel managed to collect over 100 in total. Having
contacted several charities before leaving the UK, Daniel presented the
Rookwood shirts to the Wings of Mercy organisation, which had
previously given a presentation at the school in 2007 to educate some of
the younger Rookwood children on life in the slums of Nairobi. He
also gave three full strips to the Pendekezu Letu Rehabilitation School in
Nairobi, which he came across while camping in Kenya, and even
enjoyed a game of football against them along with the friends he was
travelling with. Many of the other shirts were distributed to
schoolchildren in parts of Tanzania as he continued his trip.
‘I love sport, particularly football,’ says Daniel, ‘and it really helps to
improve your game when you’re wearing the proper kit. I read that
African children in schools did not have the opportunity to wear
football strips, so thought it would be a great idea to give them what we
in the UK take for granted. It was fantastic to meet the children and
the smiles on their faces made all the planning so worthwhile.’
‘This was a lovely way for the school to get involved in a real
community project with children from another country,’ comments Mrs
Margaret Langley, Headmistress. ‘We are all very impressed with
Daniel’s initiative in getting the project off the ground and hope to keep
in touch with some of the schools we have helped.’
