<strong>View</strong> veducation Schoolnews 42 Hampshire Collegiate Junior School receives Quality Assurance Award N ursery teachers and children at Hampshire Collegiate School recently celebrated receiving their Quality Assurance Award from the Centre for Research in Early Childhood as part of the Effective Early Learning Programme. The school has enjoyed being part of the award scheme for the last three years and this year plans to work towards further enhancing the links between the great outdoors and early learning. ‘We are always looking at ways to bring the great outdoors into the classroom and vice versa as we take the children out and about,’ says Head Teacher Elaine Hooten. ‘We recently enjoyed a fabulous sponsored toddle through the woodland on the HCS school estate that involved parents and carers coming along too, which raised over £500 for Barnado’s. This helped us explore many areas of learning from animal needs in winter to thinking about other children in need.’ The Nursery is also extending links to the wider world by using some of their fund-raising monies to sponsor one of the animals at Marwell Zoo. The children will be involved in learning about the animals, thinking about how to take care of them, visiting the zoo and then choosing the animal they wish to sponsor. Rookery Pre-Prep enjoy learning about fire safety C hildren in Rookery Pre-Prep at Rookwood School, Andover, were thrilled with a recent visit from the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service. As part of their Key Stage 1 study of fire and road safety, the education unit explained to the children how fire starts, how to prevent it, what to do in the event of a fire and general safety inside and outside the home. In addition to the classroom work, they also got the chance to look around the specially adapted fire engine, hear the siren and squirt water from the fire hoses at targets. ‘This was a fantastic way for the children to see at first-hand the work of the local fire service and to learn important lessons about fire safety,’ says Mrs Jan Ibbotson, Head of the Rookery. ‘Thank you very much to Hampshire Fire and Rescue for an excellent educational day.’ Celebrating their Quality Assurance Award at Hampshire Collegiate School Setting out on the sponsored toddle Leehurst Swan tops academic league tables T he pupils and staff at Leehurst Swan, Salisbury, are delighted that their success has been acknowledged in the latest school league tables, published in The Times. The 100 per cent achievement in science, mathematics and English, giving all pupils at least 5 A* - C grades in their GCSEs last summer, places Leehurst Swan at the top of the league tables for Wiltshire. Headmaster Roger Leake said he was delighted with the success of the pupils: ‘Leehurst Swan offers a broad and balanced education in which pupils achieve exceptional standards in core subjects and music, art, sport and drama. The school was recently awarded The Best Independent School in England for GCSE Photography for Girls. The academic success of the pupils in GCSE examinations is another facet of the exceptional standards our pupils achieve in their education.’ Leehurst Swan is an all-through school, taking pupils from age two to the end of their compulsory schooling years at age 16. A special and unexpected gift At Sherborne House School, the eight- and nine-year-olds have just had a wonderful surprise. They had been having such fun learning the ukulele last term that they decided to send a card to the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain together with a video of their rendition of Jingle Bells at the very end of the term. Imagine their surprise when they each received a gift back from the orchestra: of a copy of their single Miss Dynamitee. It was totally unexpected and a wonderful extra-special Christmas gift – just when they thought it was all over. ‘When I put it on the stereo we listened to it at supper,’ said nine-year-old Frankie. ‘It was very nice and we listened to it lots and lots of times.’ It certainly made all the children feel very special, and they are now working hard for the Southampton Festival later this term.
