Pr<strong>of</strong>. T.D. Chugh during his long academic carrier has taught, trained and mentored<br />

undergraduate and post-graduate students both in <strong>India</strong> and abroad. He graduated and post<br />

graduated in Amritsar. He started his academic and pr<strong>of</strong>essional carrier in Amritsar in 1958<br />

and moved to Rohtak in 1966. In 1972, he started a new Department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong><br />

Microbiology and established post graduate programmes-MD, M.Sc and Ph.D. In 1979, he<br />

moved to Kuwait and established a department <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Microbiology in the young faculty<br />

<strong>of</strong> Medicine.<br />

He is a gifted teacher, having been adjudged as the best teacher by his students and peers<br />

repeatedly. As a biomedical scientist, he has published 227 research papers in national and<br />

international Journals and made some landmark studies. Colicine production <strong>of</strong> Klebsiella<br />

was described on an auto transferable plasmid first time in the world literature. Also his<br />

comprehensive studies on pathogenesis <strong>of</strong> infective Endocarditis showed for the first time in<br />

the world that the adhesion <strong>of</strong> Staph. epidermidis is lipoteichoic acid. He has done<br />

comprehensive studies on the diagnosis <strong>of</strong> tuberculosis by detection <strong>of</strong> antibodies, antigens<br />

and PCR. The speciation and drug resistance <strong>of</strong> local strains was carried out. Studies on the<br />

efficacy <strong>of</strong> BCG vaccination and M. vaccae vaccine as an immunotherapeutic agent were<br />

made in tubercular patients. Serotyping, biotyping and bacteriocin typing were used as<br />

epidemiological markers for K. pneumoniae and Ps. aeruginosa in studies <strong>of</strong> nosocomial<br />

infections. He established Klebocin typing for K. pneumoniae for the first time and was<br />

awarded a grant by <strong>India</strong>n Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Research for national survey.<br />

His scientific work has been acknowledged in <strong>India</strong>. He is Fellow <strong>of</strong> <strong>National</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> and International <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> <strong>Academy</strong>. He was awarded Gen. Amir<br />

Chand Oration and Pr<strong>of</strong>essor K.L. Wig Oration. His work has been acknowledged by<br />

International Community and awarded Fellowships <strong>of</strong> The Royal College <strong>of</strong> Pathologists in<br />

1987 and American <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> Microbiology (1995). Kuwait University honored him with<br />

“Best Funded Research Award” in 2000 and “Distinguished Research Performance Award”<br />

in 2001. He has been an invited Faculty Member to several WHO Intercountry Workshops<br />

and a Visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor to Centers <strong>of</strong> Excellence.<br />

He is currently Director <strong>of</strong> Laboratories and Senior Consultant, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital and<br />

Advisor, Communicable Diseases, ICMR, Headquarters, New Delhi.<br />
