Pr<strong>of</strong>. K.N. Sharma is an excellent teacher, a first rate research worker with globally<br />
acknowledged credentials, and a highly successful administrator who has effectively<br />
contributed to the planning and development <strong>of</strong> medical institutions and hospitals.<br />
With over 200 original scientific papers, 8 monographs, and chapter contributions in<br />
important text books and internationally acknowledged publications to his credit, he is<br />
widely known for his outstanding research work. Original research contributions have been<br />
in the field <strong>of</strong> neurophysiology, behaviour and nutrition and have helped delineate<br />
fundamental concepts and their clinical significance in the fields <strong>of</strong> feeding behaviour and<br />
neural control systems, ecology <strong>of</strong> hunger and malnutrition, systems organization in<br />
homeostatic motivations, and spatio-temporal delineation <strong>of</strong> neuro-humoral events linked<br />
nociceptors, pain mechanisms and managements.<br />
He has developed a method for chronic electrode implantation in peripheral nerves in freely<br />
moving animals and this is being successfully used the world over. The method has opened a<br />
new field <strong>of</strong> analyzing information transfer and has considerable applied and clinical<br />
significance particularly in the fields <strong>of</strong> sensory systems, emotions and visceral control.<br />
With his teaching spanning over five decades both in <strong>India</strong> and abroad (USA, UK, Germany,<br />
Russia, Libya, Nepal), he has been actively involved in medical education (need based<br />
teaching-learning and assessment strategies), development <strong>of</strong> innovative teaching methods,<br />
and medical curriculum development in <strong>India</strong> (Univ. <strong>of</strong> Delhi, MCI, RGUHS, Bangalore<br />
Univ.) and abroad (Nepal, Libya).<br />
He has been a recipient <strong>of</strong> several <strong>National</strong> and International Awards such as: ICMR Award,<br />
Amrut Mody <strong>National</strong> Award for Basic <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>, CSIR, Gen. S.L. Bhatia Oration,<br />
Anokhin Medal (USSR <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>), Sechenov Medal (USSR <strong>Academy</strong><br />
<strong>of</strong> Science) in neurophysiology, Bicentenary Award (1 st Moscow <strong>Medical</strong> Institute, USSR),<br />
<strong>India</strong>n Science Congress Platinum Jubilee Oration, M.M. Basu and P.C. Mahalanobis<br />
Orations; Kamala B.K. Anand International Award in Neurosciences, ‘Suprabal Dakshin<br />
Bahu’ Civilian Award by Govt. <strong>of</strong> Nepal for outstanding contributions to medical education<br />
