Pr<strong>of</strong>. O.P. Gupta is currently working as Emeritus Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Medicine, BJ <strong>Medical</strong><br />

College, Ahmedabad. He has been Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Medicine, Dean and Director, <strong>Medical</strong><br />

Education and Research, Government <strong>of</strong> Gujarat. He retired in 1988.<br />

Formerly, Pr<strong>of</strong>. Gupta also worked as Asstt. Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Medicine at All <strong>India</strong> Institute <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong>, New Delhi (1960), research fellow at the Royal PG <strong>Medical</strong> School,<br />

Hammersmith, London (1957-59) and at Joslin Diabetes Clinic, Boston, USA (1964).<br />

He has been recipient <strong>of</strong> several awards including prestigious Dr. B.C. Roy award. He has<br />

worked as consultant, advisor and fellow to the World Health Organization and to Asian<br />

Development Bank, USAID, Ford Foundation and several national organizations. He has<br />

been closely associated with <strong>National</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> in several capacities,<br />

including as Vice President and Emeritus Pr<strong>of</strong>essor. He has been the founder president <strong>of</strong><br />

research society for study <strong>of</strong> diabetes in <strong>India</strong> (RSSDI) 1972, President <strong>of</strong> Diabetes<br />

Association <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong>, 1981 and RSSDI, 1998. He has been recipient <strong>of</strong> several gold medal<br />

and national awards, has published a large number <strong>of</strong> papers in national and international<br />

journals and contributed chapters in national and international books on diabetes. He has<br />

widely traveled and has presided over sessions <strong>of</strong> international diabetes conferences.<br />

Dr. Gupta is also recipient <strong>of</strong> (1) SGP Moses oration and gold medal, Kochi, 2002; (2)<br />

Rashtriya Gaurav Award, <strong>India</strong> International Friendship Society, 2002; (3) Dr. Vasavda<br />

oration and gold medal, IMA 2003; (4) <strong>National</strong> <strong>Academy</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> (<strong>India</strong>), KL<br />

Wig oration and gold medal, 2004; (5) contributed a chapter in national textbook <strong>of</strong> diabetes<br />

by RSSDI-2006 and (6) has been appointed as co-ordinator, noncommunicable disease cell,<br />

Govt. <strong>of</strong> Gujarat, 2006.<br />

At present, Dr. Gupta is practicing as a consultant physician, diabetologist and<br />

endocrinologist at Ahmedabad. He is attached to several eminent hospitals and institutes<br />

there and is still engaged in academic activities.<br />
