Pr<strong>of</strong>. J.S. Guleria after his MBBS and MD in general medicine from Amritsar <strong>Medical</strong><br />
College, joined the then fledgling AIIMS in 1958. He obtained DM in cardiology from<br />
AIIMS in 1962. Pr<strong>of</strong>. Guleria supported the development <strong>of</strong> AIIMS from its very formative<br />
years. He contributed significantly in the establishment <strong>of</strong> medical disciplines. He occupied<br />
various faculty positions, became Pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> Medicine in 1971 and later Head, Department<br />
<strong>of</strong> Medicine and Dean AIIMS.<br />
After his retirement from AIIMS in 1987 he established the Department <strong>of</strong> Medicine in the<br />
newly started Delhi University College <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> <strong>Sciences</strong> at Shahdra.<br />
His contributions to advancing medical education in <strong>India</strong> and in third world countries are<br />
highly significant. His excellence as a teacher has been recognized by various national<br />
bodies. <strong>Medical</strong> Council <strong>of</strong> <strong>India</strong> conferred Dr. B.C. Roy <strong>National</strong> Award as “Eminent<br />
Teacher” in 1983; IMA appointed him <strong>National</strong> Pr<strong>of</strong>essor in Medicine; AIIMS honoured him<br />
with “Most Popular Teacher” award in 1993.<br />
WHO used his services as a consultant in medical education for assisting and developing<br />
undergraduate curricula in the countries <strong>of</strong> South East Asia Region. He has served as a<br />
visiting Pr<strong>of</strong>essor and an examiner in both undergraduate and post-graduate degrees to<br />
various universities in <strong>India</strong> and abroad.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>essor Guleria is deeply committed to research activities. He along with other colleagues<br />
has made significant contributions in the understanding <strong>of</strong> problems <strong>of</strong> high altitude hypoxia,<br />
chronic obstructive lung disease, famine oedema <strong>of</strong> Bihar and haemodynamic changes in<br />
severe anaemia. <strong>India</strong>n council <strong>of</strong> <strong>Medical</strong> Research selected him for M.N.Sen oration award<br />
for high altitude studies 1977, and Dr. P.N. Raju Oration Award 1983 for original research<br />
work in chronic chest diseases. He is also the recipient <strong>of</strong> Shri Om Prakash Bhasin<br />
foundation for Science and Technology Awards in the category <strong>of</strong> health and medical<br />
sciences 1990. He was a co-chairman and member <strong>of</strong> WHO South East-Asia Region<br />
committee for research for 4 years.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>. Guleria is a distinguished physician who practices scientific and holistic medicine. He<br />
has received awards, recognitions and orations from various pr<strong>of</strong>essional bodies for his<br />
contribution to clinical medicine. He was awarded Padma Shri in 2003. Presently he is Sr.<br />
Consultant in Medicine at Sitaram Bhartia Institute <strong>of</strong> Science Research, New Delhi.<br />
