Excitement is brewing as Tynemouth again plays host to the Cumberland Arms Beer Festival. Beer lovers will be raising a glass or two as more than 50 of the nation’s finest tipples are brought together to celebrate the second Tynemouth Food Festival. The village’s historic Cumberland Arms will be throwing open its doors between May 9-16 as it taps into the spirit of the culinary celebration. Scores of seasonal – and unusual – beers never before seen in the North East will join popular local names such as Mordue and the Allendale Brewery at the week-long celebration of the ‘noble hop.’ The event is one of many high profile revelries taking place to mark this year’s Tynemouth Food Festival. The Cumberland Arms on Front Street is already well known for its impressive selection of real ales with 12 hand pulls regularly available serving such names as Ringwood Best Bitter, Timothy Taylor Golden, Gales Seafarers and Rudgate Olde Honey. The beer festival is one of the largest events of its kind held in the area – although not landlord David Irving’s biggest salute to the nation’s favourite alcoholic tipple. 6 Popular Beer Festival Returns to Tynemouth He once featured in the Guinness Book of Records for the most beers served in a public house after putting on 120 different real ales and 16 ciders for a week-long festival held at the Tap and Spile pub in Hendon, Sunderland, in 1996. Sadly, the achievement is no longer recognised by the Guinness Book of Records, but it means David’s feat still stands. David – who has been landlord of the Cumberland Arms for the past 18 years - is looking forward to bringing so many real ales to Tynemouth as part of the food festival. “We’re going to feature a variety of seasonal beers for the festival. Some of these are only available for three or four weeks of the year. “We have everything you need to make this beer festival a great occasion. The majority of the real ales will never have been seen in this region, making this a unique event for both real ale lovers and those interested in trying something different. “I wanted to create something special to mark the first Tynemouth Food Festival and last year’s outing was such a success there was no way we couldn’t roll out the barrel for a second time. With the broad selection of beers and real ales we will have on offer, I believe it will be another memorable occasion. “After all, real ale and high quality food go hand-in-hand.” The Cumberland Arms Beer Festival will take place at the Cumberland Arms, Front Street, Tynemouth, between May 9-16.
