WELCOME TO THE
It is with pleasure that we welcome you to the second
Tynemouth Food Festival organised by the Tynemouth Business
Forum. Last year’s event was a huge success thanks to the
amazing support from all of you. This year the festival is going
to be even bigger and better. As well as the two days of great
local food and drink, cookery demonstrations from locally
renowned chefs and a week long real ale festival, we have
three afternoon tea dances hosted by the Grand Hotel in the
wonderful setting of Tynemouth Station. The successful pop-up
restaurants are also back with three of the region’s top dining
names bringing their award-winning cuisine to Tynemouth as
they help launch this year’s food festival. King’s School is
again hosting these over three nights between May 8-10 with
chefs Rhian Cradock, Troy Terrington and David Kennedy. What
better way to get in the mood for the weekend’s gastronomy
than attending one of these pop- ups?
This year we have created a food court area in King’s School
with a wide selection of street food stalls, a cider bar and a
cocktail bar – food and drink from around the world to
tantalise your taste buds. We also have 40 market stallholders
selling a wide range of local artisan produce in Queen Victoria
Park; the cream of the region’s culinary talent turning up the
heat in a state-of-the-art demo kitchen; local school children’s
biscuit decorating skills displayed in shops throughout the
village; entertainment for youngsters from a local storyteller
and a local theatre company and the winning school from
the Grand Hotel’s Junior MasterChef Style competition
demonstrating their skills in the demonstration kitchen.
So much to see, do and taste!
None of this, however, would have
been possible without the generous
support of our sponsors from the local
business community, in particular The
Co-operative Membership, the
enthusiastic involvement of the
exhibitors and the amazing support of
the local chefs. Particular mention must
again be given to the steering group
who have worked tirelessly over the
year to ensure that this year’s festival is
again a huge success. Finally, a big
thank you to all of you, for again
joining us over the weekend. Enjoy the
sights, sounds, aromas and tastes of a
celebration of fine food, drink and
culinary skills. We hope you enjoy
yourselves and look forward to seeing
you again next year.
Excitement is brewing as
Tynemouth again plays host to
the Cumberland Arms Beer
Festival.
Beer lovers will be raising a glass or two as
more than 50 of the nation’s finest tipples
are brought together to celebrate the
second Tynemouth Food Festival.
The village’s historic Cumberland Arms will
be throwing open its doors between May
9-16 as it taps into the spirit of the culinary
celebration.
Scores of seasonal – and unusual – beers
never before seen in the North East will join
popular local names such as Mordue and the
Allendale Brewery at the week-long
celebration of the ‘noble hop.’
The event is one of many high profile
revelries taking place to mark this year’s
Tynemouth Food Festival.
The Cumberland Arms on Front Street is
already well known for its impressive
selection of real ales with 12 hand pulls
regularly available serving such names as
Ringwood Best Bitter, Timothy Taylor
Golden, Gales Seafarers and Rudgate Olde
Honey.
The beer festival is one of the largest events
of its kind held in the area – although not
landlord David Irving’s biggest salute to the
nation’s favourite alcoholic tipple.
6
Popular Beer
Festival Returns
to Tynemouth
He once featured in the Guinness Book of
Records for the most beers served in a public
house after putting on 120 different real ales
and 16 ciders for a week-long festival held at
the Tap and Spile pub in Hendon, Sunderland,
in 1996.
Sadly, the achievement is no longer recognised
by the Guinness Book of Records, but it means
David’s feat still stands.
David – who has been landlord of the
Cumberland Arms for the past 18 years - is
looking forward to bringing so many real ales
to Tynemouth as part of the food festival.
“We’re going to feature a variety of seasonal
beers for the festival. Some of these are only
available for three or four weeks of the year.
“We have everything you need to make this
beer festival a great occasion. The majority of
the real ales will never have been seen in this
region, making this a unique event for both
real ale lovers and those interested in trying
something different.
“I wanted to create something special to mark
the first Tynemouth Food Festival and last year’s
outing was such a success there was no way
we couldn’t roll out the barrel for a second
time. With the broad selection of beers and
real ales we will have on offer, I believe it will
be another memorable occasion.
“After all, real ale and high quality food go
hand-in-hand.”
The Cumberland Arms Beer Festival will take place at the
Cumberland Arms, Front Street, Tynemouth, between May 9-16.
SATURDAY, MAY 11
11am: Rob Arnold, sous chef, Irvin’s Brasserie,
The Irvin Building, Fish Quay, North Shields,
0191 296 3238, www.irvinsbrasserie.co.uk
Rob was born in Germany but now lives in North Shields
having started working with the Irvin’s team in May 2011.
Rob has held positions at some of the most well respected
restaurants in the North East, including the Hotel du Vin,
Jesmond Dene House and Rockliffe Hall under Kenny
Atkinson.
12pm: Gareth Kyle, ITV Best British Dish and four
times MasterChef Live winner, www.garethkyle.co.uk
Gareth has been cooking for as long as he can remember.
His two earliest memories are the 1990 football World
Cup and being caught by his mum in the kitchen with a
pan on the stove cooking lemonade soup! Luckily, his skills
are much sharper now.
He made a name for himself in 2010 when he was a
regional contender on ITV’s high profile Britain’s Best Dish.
He has won MasterChef Live at the BBC Good Food Show,
a MasterChef Champion of Champions event at the
London studios and last year took first place in the Eat!
NewcastleGateshead Trial Shift competition.
1pm: David Kennedy, David Kennedy at Vallum,
Vallum Farm, Military Road, East Wallhouses,
Northumberland, 01434 672 406,
www.vallumfarm.co.uk
Former North East Chef of the Year David Kennedy
made his name at Newcastle’s Black Door, the awardwinning
restaurant on Clayton Street West he opened
in 2003.
This was followed by Brasserie Black Door which has
now morphed into the acclaimed David Kennedy’s Food
Social at the Biscuit Factory in Newcastle, where he is
executive chef. His name also appears above the door
at the Bib Gourmand David Kennedy’s River Café on
North Shields Fish Quay.
Last autumn he opened David Kennedy at Vallum in the
Tyne Valley where he continues to be a vocal advocate
of local and seasonal produce which he champions on
his ever-changing menus

2pm: Troy Terrington, head chef,
Blackfriars Restaurant and Banquet Hall,
Friars Street, Newcastle, 0191261 5945,
www.blackfriarsrestaurant.co.uk
Troy – who is making a welcome return to the
Tynemouth Food Festival demonstration stage -
moved to the North East to pursue his culinary
passion in 2005 and is now head chef at
Blackfriars, based in a former Dominican friary
which can trace its roots back to 1239.
The restaurant took the prestigious Taste of
England gold award in this year’s North East
England Tourism Awards, reflecting not only
Troy’s skill in the kitchen but Blackfriars’
commitment to using local and seasonal
ingredients – often straight from the farm – on
its traditional British menu.
Surprisingly, cheffing wasn’t top of Troy’s list of
must-do jobs as a child – originally he wanted to
be a high flyer with the RAF, then a sports
scientist and an English teacher. But he says:
“Now I am a chef, which I never thought I
would be, but I have the bug and don’t want to
give up.”
3pm: Simon Walsh, executive head chef for the Close House
complex, Close House Hotel, Heddon-on-the-Wall,
Northumberland, 01661 852 255, www.closehouse.co.uk
Chef Simon Walsh has worked at some of the North’s most
prestigious dining out establishments – the Lakeside Hotel at
Windermere, Cumbria, The Barrasford Arms, Slaley Hall, Bistro 21
and The Morritt Arms, before joining the team at Close House
Hotel.
The affable chef who demonstrated his culinary talents at last
year’s Tynemouth Food Festival, is passionate about local produce
and sources as many ingredients as possible from within a 30 mile
radius of Close House.
He says: “The produce we use is fresh and vibrant; it speaks for
itself. We invest in a local community of great suppliers. Why serve
French cheese when you can use Northumbrian? It doesn’t make
sense.”
4pm: Junior Grand MasterChef champions present
their winning dish
This slot will remain a mystery until the day. King’s School
took the Junior Grand MasterChef competition title last year
and got the chance to cook their winning dish live on the
demonstration kitchen alongside The Grand Hotel’s head
chef, to a packed audience of proud parents and festivalgoers.
The demo was even filmed by Sky Tyne and Wear!
Teams of budding chefs from secondary schools across the
area are invited to enter the high profile competition
organised by The Grand Hotel. Not only does the winning
team have the chance to take to the food festival demo
stage, but work alongside the Grand Hotel’s head chef to
perfect their dish.
gastronomy, through North Africa and up
into Europe and Britain over 1,000 years
ago. Influenced by the merchants of the
time, the market stall finger food they ate
along the way and the spices they
brought back, FatFriars is a melting pot of
full-on lewd food with bawdy burgers,
spiced chicken, sticky puddings and other
street fodder. Not for the feint hearted!
Pop-up restaurants
Three of the region’s top restaurants are bringing
their award-winning cuisine to Tynemouth as they
help launch this year’s food festival in mouthwatering
style.
The village’s King’s School is playing host to three very
different and exclusive pop-up restaurants over three nights
between May 8-10 as chefs Rhian Cradock, Troy Terrington
and David Kennedy help get the second Tynemouth Food
Festival off to a truly tasty start.
The Seaside SupperKlub @ King’s nights’ follow the sell-out
success of former North East Chef of the Year David Kennedy’s
foray into the world of pop-up dining at last year’s inaugural
Tynemouth Food Festival.
This year’s event will again see King’s School’s Café K in the
Oswin Building transformed into a stylish fine dining venue as
The Feathers Inn’s legendary
hospitality launches the
Seaside SupperKlub @
King’s on May 8 with a
fabulous four course
‘A Taste of the Feathers’.
Situated in the small village of
Hedley on the Hill in the Tyne
Valley, The Feathers Inn has a big
reputation. You will get the
opportunity to experience the
dishes that have brought chefproprietor
Rhian Cradock and his
team such accolades as Great
British Pub of the Year and Great
British Gastropub of the Year.
As well as ambassadors for the
RSPCA promoting ethically
sourced ingredients, their skills in
seasonality and local sourcing
have also seen them awarded
Northumbria dining pub of the
year five times.
The menu priced at £35 is a terrific
way to launch this year’s festivities.

Blackfriars Restaurant in Newcastle – which
earlier this year picked up the prestigious Taste of
England title in the North East England Tourism
Awards – is taking over Café K on May 9.
It marks a welcome return to Tynemouth for Blackfriars’
owner Andy Hook, who ran the village’s critically acclaimed
and much missed Sidney’s Restaurant.
Head chef Troy Terrington is offering a menu which reflects
the school canteen space, Blackfriars’ new FatFriars street
food concept and the classic but gutsy traditional British
dishes the restaurant has become famous for.
Andy says: “We are truly delighted to be invited to take part
in this year's Tynemouth Food Festival and will be offering
something a bit new.
”FatFriars represents the culinary journey British cuisine took
from the Gardens of Baghdad, the epicentre of creative
gastronomy, through North Africa and up into Europe and
Britain over 1,000 years ago.
The Seaside SupperKlub @ King’s opens for the
final time on May 10 with David Kennedy holding
court at a special Tynemouth Food Festival gala
night at £42.50 a head.
He is bringing his Vallum artisan experience to the coast with
a fantastic five-course Northumbrian tasting menu parading
the ingredients he has on his doorstep at David Kennedy at
Vallum.
These include heritage vegetables from North Country
Growers which works out of Vallum Kitchen garden,
handmade breads from baker Murray Rhind, locally foraged in
season produce and fish from Bywell Smokery.
The spring menu will also include a glass of fizz and two
glasses of wine from Wine Chambers in Tynemouth to match
the food.
“Influenced by the merchants of the
time, the market stall food they ate
along the way and the spices they
brought back, FatFriars is a melting pot
of full-on lewd food with zingy fish,
burgers and unctuously sticky puddings.
It will also be a lot of fun!”
The meal costs £35 per person.
So it is appropriate that the two will be
converging at this year’s Tynemouth Food
Festival.
Jan Archbold of Stories for Tots will be cooking
up an eclectic menu of foodie themed tales to
whet the appetite of our younger festival-goers
on May 11-12.
Find out all about the Hungry Caterpillar, the
Tiger Who Came to Tea, why Sam-I-Am
persists in pestering a grumpy grouch to eat a
plate of green eggs and ham, and relish in the
pace of the classic Each Peach Pear Plum.
Jan has a natural ability to bring stories to
life and loves to get into character. She is
best known as Wanda the Witch who takes
to the skies every Hallowe’en, Santa Claus’s
wife Mrs Mary Christmas and the daring
pirate, Ruby Bloodstone.
She is busy concocting a suitable persona for
Tynemouth Food Festival “along the lines of
Downton Abbey’s Mrs Patmore!”
Jan will be reading in the King’s School
outdoor learning classroom between
11am-1pm and 2pm-4pm on both the
Saturday and Sunday. Tickets cost £2.50
each per child, but will be valid all day so
families can dip in and out of the storytelling
sessions.
Tickets will be available on the day from the Tynemouth Food Festival stand in Queen Victoria Park.
