CAMPUS BUILDINGS BY CATEGORY, PROGRAMS, AND SERVICES<br />

Administration<br />

Tingley Memorial Hall<br />

Tingley Memorial Hall is the main administration building. It was dedicated in 1908, by Mr. Samuel<br />

Herbert Tingley of Providence, Rhode Island, in memory of his beloved wife, Mrs. Adella Malvina Tingley.<br />

This building is listed in the National Register of Historic Places.<br />

Academic Buildings<br />

Bowen Hall<br />

This building, constructed in 1900, formerly housed the <strong>University</strong> library. It presently houses The<br />

Freshman College, the Department of Education, the General Education Common Core Computer<br />

Laboratory, Office of Professional and Clinical Experiences, two classrooms, and other offices.<br />

Calhoun-Downs-Laymen Hall<br />

Constructed in 1949 for use as a science facility, this two-story brick structure has been remodeled and<br />

houses the <strong>University</strong> Bookstore and Offices of The Vice President for <strong>Student</strong> Development and Services,<br />

Career Development and Counseling, and the Department of Art.<br />

Grace T. Kennedy Business and Communications Building<br />

Erected in 1992, this building houses classrooms and offices of the Department of Business Administration,<br />

the Department of English and Foreign Languages, and the Mass Communications Department.<br />

It has a video/radio production studio, two computer laboratories, two electronic classrooms<br />

and an auditorium.<br />

Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center<br />

This modern facility was occupied in 1980. Constructed through the generosity of Dr. & Mrs. Jonas T.<br />

Kennedy and the United Methodist Church, this structure houses the Department of Health and<br />

Physical Education. The center also contains a 2,000 seat arena.<br />

Lee Building<br />

Erected in 1898, the Lee Building is one of the older remaining <strong>University</strong> structures and is designated<br />

as the site for the Arthur Rose Museum. It is located in the National Historic District.<br />

W. Vernon Middleton Fine Arts Center<br />

The Fine Arts Center was completed in 1968. This building is a contemporary structure containing an<br />

auditorium with a seating capacity of over 650 persons, 4 classrooms, 2 dressing rooms, 2 practice<br />

rooms, state of the art piano laboratory and several well-equipped offices.<br />

James S. Thomas Science Center<br />

This facility was erected in 1973. It is named in honor of Bishop J. S. Thomas, a prominent <strong>Claflin</strong><br />

alumnus. It provides classrooms, laboratories, greenhouse, offices for biology, chemistry, mathematics,<br />

computer science department, and 2 computer laboratories.<br />
