Traction Engines excellent arrangement of spring mounting, by placing the intermediate shaft on the same horizontal centre-line as the main axle. There are some serious drawbacks to the two shafts being placed in this manner, but this is not the time to mention them. Advance Company. — The Advance Company's arrangement is shown by Fig. 150. ADVANCE CO. attached to the bracket, which is pivoted to the cast ing shown ; the casting and axle are capable of vertical movement sufficient to compress the spring, and relieve the boiler of jar and sudden strain. The free end of the bracket is broad and long, and slotted to take the two studs, with nuts which are tightened to allow the 220
Spring-mounted Traction Engines casting to move vertically between the plates. The upper casting supports the boiler on the mainspring. On the upper side of the abutment piece is another spring. The spring acts as a cushion to the upward movement of the boiler, and is independent of the spring. The boiler being suspended between two springs, its vertical movement must be brought to an elastic limit in either direction, thus wholly relieving the gearing of sudden jar, making it more pleasant for the engine-driver while travelling on the road, and preventing an amount of wear, and thereby prolonging the life of the engine. RussELLANDCo.-In Russell's traction engine springs are adopted at both ends of the engine. Fig. 151 shows the hind axle-spring arrangement very clearly. Nichols and Shepard.— The main axle is placed about the centre of the fire-box ; the method of mounting the engines on springs is nicely carried out, as shown by the illustrations (Figs. 152 and 153). The rear axle is square, forming a good seat for the spiral springs, which are kept in place by a bracket. na '5' The springs are hidden in the box above the axle.
